Windage trays are another issue. For those that have never used, or seen one. They're generally a flat piece of sheet metal with small ribs on them to reduce vibration. Thus stopping the cracking of the tray. As they are very close, but just under the crankshaft. They are sometimes mounted to special main bearing bolts that have extensions built into them. There positioned just above the oil in the oil pan. The point is to keep the high winds that are created by the spinning crankshaft from picking up any of the oil supply that is in the pan. Used in competition applications.

Actually trays are utilized by most auto brands today in most /all of their engines. The tray reduces the oil cloud formed from the oil spray. Reduced cloud = reduced pressure in the crankcase and less drag on the crank which = higher power output and better fuel economy.
