Owner thinks it is a burnt pistion.

Ultra Van #500 is a Corvair coach (weighs only 4,000lbs) and needs to be towed to Wichita, KS

Is there anyone with a truck and trailer in or nearby Carthage, MO or Wichita, KS who could help trailer a broken down Ultravan to Wichita, KS?

IF you can hlep please PM me and I will give you the owner's contact info.

He rented a car to go home and has a place to keep the Ultra Van for a week. He like to get it home ASAP.

Thank you.

Oh man, I know the feeling. Hope he has a seperate towing policy. I won't back out of my driveway without it. We have lost two engines 2,000 miles from home. Wish I could help him. We are on the other side of the state on the same hiway 60 in Dexter. Well, we live there. Today on our way to St. Louis for treatment.
Keep us posted when you learn something about the Owner and his Corvair coach.

I don't know anything about Corvair engines. Can you disable the affected cylinder by removing the pushrods and letting it limp along on one less cylinder?

That may not work well I had a corvair that burnt a piston . The car filled up with smoke from the heating system ducts as it is ducted from the engine block heat.

Assuming that the Ultra is a rear-engine, rear-drive vehicle, could the rear wheels be put on a U-Haul rental tow dolly and hauled home that way?

He now thinks it is a dropped valve seat over a burnt piston.

There is not much clearance between the valve and the piston.
If one were able to get the seat backup in the head without taking the head off - Rolling Eyes - and they took away the rocker and push rod - it could be driven home if all else is still okay.

The RV park will not let him work on it.

So one option for him would be to find a place nearby where he can pull the head and stick on a good one and then see if he could drive it home.

Air Cooled Engine - no coolant to mess with...

Anyone live close to Carthage, MO and would not mind him working on his coach?

That would be a nice idea if it worked.
However, the Ultra Van has a 7.5' wide tire track and a tow dolly is not wide enough.

UpDate: Owen was able to get UV500 towed to KS.

T. Kalp of Wichita, KS - WROTE the following on: April 02, 2014 07:46PM on CC Forum

After Owen's Ultra Van arrived at about three this afternoon and we got it unloaded from the roll back and parked by the shop, diagnostics were performed. Pulled all the spark plugs none looked oily or had oil spatter. Ran a compression test and number 5 was zero. Put number 5 on TDC and fed a little air to the cylinder and air came rushing out the carb.

Owen dropped the valve cover on the passenger side and the rocker on number 5 intake was loose and the valve stem was setting lower than the exhaust.

Does removing the rockers and pushrods work when it is an intake valve hanging open? I would guess it might mess up the fuel mixture some. Never have tried it. Does keeping the exhaust valve closed make it work?

Anyway will keep everyone posted.

T. Kalp
Wichita, KS

Thanks everyone for your concern and help.
Sincerely, Tony

To: T. Kalp, Owen and Tony.

As a guy the has had to use engines to limp home on many occasions, with that engine, running with a pushrod removed may allow a cam follower to exit is bore. That will cause a loss of lube oil pressure. Ego, this is not recommended.

I am remembering that Corvair heads were aluminum with inserts for the valve seats. It is possible that one of those has come loose. It is also possible that the intake valve has seized in the valve guide. This is highly unlikely, possible. If you grab the valve tip with something like vise-grips and a couple of pieces of brass/aluminum so the valve is not damaged, and try to turn the valve. You will quickly know the condition.

Good luck

Matt

Call Clark's Corvair Parts and order a rebuilt head. Do a Google search for
them, I can't link while on my phone.

I never worked on a Corvair engine. I thought they were air cooled individual cylinders like an aircraft or VW engine.

http://www.contactmagazine.com/Issue75/Centerfold.jpg

I see the head is separate from the cylinders, but it looks almost as simple to remove it as an aircraft one. Why not just pull the head and see what it going on. It looks like removing about 12 cylinder bolts and disconnecting accessories is all that is required.

Again I like to think everyone here who was helpful when trying to figure out how to get it towed home.

My last update was to let everyone know the owner Owen was able to get it towed home. He took it to a guy in the Corvair club who owns and works on corvairs.
That guy simply gave a quick update on what they found the day it was dropped off. When they have more time they will look into some more.

Thanks again for your kindness and help.
