Trying to help dispose of a friend's GMC parts, I have a new HEI distributor, cap and rotor. When I cross reference the cap it shows up as a Chevrolet or Cadillac specific part not Oldsmobile.
(Summit Ignition Performance Upgrade #SUM-850013)
Will this distributor and parts work on an Oldsmobile engine?

Can any GM HEI distributor work on the Oldsmobile?

Must turn counter clockwise. Must have Olds oil pump drive and distributor
gear, and fit the hole in the olds block with the correct reach. Has to
have the correct advance curve for motorhome. 455 and 403 are different
curves.

The Olds distributor turns the opposite direction. There was also something about a thrust washer on one of them. And you need to verify the pump drive is the same. Why don't you call Dick Paterson and ask him for sure.

OOPS. I see that James Hupy already answered your question while I was typing and watching a movie. He probably knows more about it than I do.

Thanks guys, my brother is interested in it for a 442 Olds with a 455.
Doesn't the the cut of the gear "right hand or left hand helix" determine
the rotation of the distributor.

Not really, the coil is different. There is a color code on the wires. From memory the wires we need are yellow and red. The others are white and red. Before buying anything double check that the colors I stated are correct. My spare is in the coach about 11 miles from here so I can not easily check it right now.

Olds should be Olds as far as dist rotation. Thrust washers are also different due to reverse gear bevel
Wire colors--- that's on the pickup coil not the ign coil, yes?
HEI V8 caps all the same with integral coil. There is also a smaller HEI with remote coil came out later

There should be a casting number on the distributor that will tell you what engine it is for.

Sorry John, but the ignition coil and pickup coil must be matched in
polarity. GM color coded the wiring
so as to eliminate any possibility of mistake. The cars with right side
starters (Chevys, iron block Caddys &
Toronados) used one polarity and the left hand starters, which includes RWD
Olds, use the other.

Thanks for all the help guys. I did some digging on my own and found this
web site:

http://www.ebay.com/gds/HEI-Ignitions-A-primer-/10000000002053885/g.html

Half way down on the article it talks about the colors of the coil and pick
up coil.

If my brother got an Olds Toronado 455 engine with the starter on the right
(passenger) side than this distributor will work for him. Brother has been
an Olds fan for years, so I am sure he is all aware of this. I didn't.

I could not cross reference the distributor # anywhere on the web. 1103346

Darn, wrong on the coil, but I have never thought of it and never had a problem with swapping coils either Smile
