I have an opportunity to buy a Dometic Fridge, but it is larger with an ice maker. Width and depth are the same, height is approximately 6" taller?

Is there room to modify the current fridge cabinet to accommodate the larger unit? It looks like I might be able to fit it if there is room above the wheelwell. I don't have the original fridge removed yet.

I plan to completely remodel that area for the larger fridge and a on demand water heater....

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
You will not be able to go up because of the curve of the coach body. You will need to go down to get the 6".

You might be able to get the frig to fit if you can extend it forward of its current location, I.e., further from the curved wall.
My "direct replacement" requires about an addition 1 1/2 inch from the wall. Dometic went to a universal size heat exchanger, instead of the original one that was sized to the frig. Universal takes up more room higher up on the wall, requiring the frig being moved further from the wall.
Hope this helps. I have seem many coaches with the frig moved forward, especially when a wheel well is involved.

I think you might have trouble finding 6" more height in the fridge location. I would take some careful measurements before buying the taller fridge. IF you can move it into the living space far enough to clear the wheel well, you can move the floor of the enclosure down and will also gain some space at the top, due to the curve of the roof. But, I'm not sure you can move it out that far without it seriously encroaching into your 'kitchen' space.

There has been some good input on this thread , I would have to side here with Carl.  If you have a standard GM floorplan with the frig next to the door-- you can't really go down or up, you would have to bring the cabinet out to go anywhere and at that point the frig would be in the way,  You need to be off the wheel well to make that unit fit I feel.

I will also tell you this, the absorption system used in the units get much hotter as the unit increases in size to the point of failure.  This is the reason for the frig recall-- there is nothing wrong making a 6.6cf frig using the heating amonia gas process.  Make the frig bigger, the coils heat up and bag they breech and fire is on.  I should say nothing in that we are selling a blue million fire systems to combat the problem.  I feel we are better off with smaller units.  6.6cf is a pretty good sized frig-- yea you can have only a 12 pac beer and 1 tub of ice cream-- hey, it's tough all over!

Any time you change things there are unexpected results, I would pass on a bigger frig, just too much work for such a small reward.

Steve,

I'm not familiar with the GMC built models as I have two Avions. They came with single door fridges. A PO installed a large double
door Dometic fridge but to do so he had to extend it into the aisle four inches. I have noticed that the GMC built models have
deeper fridge compartments.

The amount that the larger fridge will protrude into the aisle in your Glenbrook is a function of how deep and high the fridge is
and how low you can mount it over the wheel well.

To determine that I would suggest:

1) make a cardboard template of the side of the fridge; that will give you the depth and height.
2) at the wheel well measure the distance from the lip of the body to the top of the inside the wheel well.
3) transfer that measurement to the side of the body using masking tape.
4) extend that tape forward and in the door.
5) sit the cardboard template on the tape and see how far it sticks into the aisle.

Keep in mind that GMC probably did not install the fridge compartment base directly on top of the wheel well (Avion didn't) and
there probably is space between the top of the inside of the wheel well and the bottom of the fridge compartment.

Have you considered adding an ice maker to your existing refrigerator?

It might be less work than installing a larger fridge. If your existing fridge needs work, you might get the cold section rebuilt. Leon in Shipshewana, IN does excellent work.

Correct.

On GM upfitted caoches there is just enough room for the "heater hoses" going to the water heater in the bathroom.

I am fairly sure that one could get the room for a refrigerator a few inches taller than OEM, but a full 6 inches???? Due to the curve of the body, it would need to be moved inboard to sit just inboard of the wheel well. At that point you could have one a LOT taller than what you have proposed. But then it would pretty much be sitting in the isle in your kitchen. Shocked

I am with JimB on this one.
