Just curious if anyone has ever painted the fiberglass in a wet bath? Walls ceiling floor etc.?

Mine really looks fine.. but.. always a but..I had to fix a crack in the floor due to bad support. Crack was 12" long. now it needs paint over the fiberglass repair. Thought about just painting the spot as close as I could get and install a shower mat to cover it up.

But.. if anyone knows a easy way to refinish it I might change to a lighter color.

I have always though about different paint schemes in the bathroom just to
give it more appeal than all of the white.
Hopefully someone has done this and will chime in with pictures.

Given that it is a wet bath and gelcoat finish, I would treat it like a
boat for refinishing. Awlgrip is a popular, high-quality finish.
Directions for this application would be similar to this page:

Seems to me there's one important difference between boats and the bath
module: 35 years of soap scum. If I were going to attempt to paint a bath
module, I'd at least consult with those who refinish bath tubs.

Joe,
Home Depot or Lowes has an epoxy paint kit for refinishing fibreglass bathtubs/showers. Cost about $45. I have used it several times to repair and refinish tub/showers in apartments.

It comes in white or bisque and is available in spray cans or brushable paint cans.

The finish is very good and holds up to multiple tenant family use.Your GMC bath will never see that much abuse.

If you use the spray kit buy a good respirator and extinguish all flames- oven, stove, and reefer pilots.

Yeah, I'll second that. I've also had good-to-excellent results with the Valspar spray paint for plastic as well as Krylon's Fusion for plastic (least expensive source seems to be Wal-Mart) though I haven't tried them on a bath. You could try them in the areas of lesser exposure if you wanted more color options.

There was a video/demo on the web where they tested the plastic spray paints on HDPE and with some sanding some of it actually stuck and nothing sticks to HDPE. Search around, it may still be out there.

I've been using them for exterior paint in a high humidity, high sunlight exposure for about 2 years now even on aluminum and both are holding up well. For aluminum, Valspar seems to hold slightly better but that's based on just three or four projects.

I used the Valspar plastic paint on the bathroom cabinet doors and the "watershield" at the bottom (inside) of the bathroom door. Gave the bathroom just a splash of color that was better than the drab original faded beige/yellow. Did it about 2 years ago and it hasn't chipped, flaked, or crinkled in any way. Really spruced up the bathroom for minimal effort.

Check with Jim Bounds. I remember reading where the Co-Op refinished a wet bath unit some time ago.

Gene,

"Home Depot or Lowes has an epoxy paint kit for refinishing fibreglass bathtubs/showers."

Is there enough spray can wise to do inside entire module?

Thanks!

Pete,
I think so.
The tub/shower combos that I have done were: back wall 5x6.5 -end walls 2x6.5x2 - front and inside face of tub 5x1.2x2 and the tub bottom 5x2. Total area= ~80.5 sqft.

I haven't measured the GMC bath but it can't be much larger even including the ceiling.

Thanks Gene. A new white gel coat look is what I want. Any specialty paint and reducers from pro auto body store would undoubtedly run bigger bucks than that.

The dry bath in our 77 Kingsley was painted 20 years ago and at present
there are a couple small exposed spots on the counter. It was done in a
off white colour and compared to our 77 Eleganza (dry bathin original
colour) it is fresher, brighter, more modern looking.

I drilled holes in the floor and fill the entire floor with expansion foam so the floor is nice and firm now. Next step, tile the door, and paint the rest.
