I know we don't post photos here in the interest of saving money for the host but wouldn't this forum be a lot more interesting and therefore better for the GMC Motorhome community if we could see photos of what each of us are doing?
How to threads would be much easier to understand and a lot simpler with a few pictures of what the person is doing or what a part looks like.
Road trip threads are always better with photos.
I own two GMCs at the moment and I don't check in here as often as I might if there were photos included. I think for the overall benefit of the community it would be better if we had a forum were we could post photos. What would it take to do this?
Any opinions on this?

Richard,
Many of our GMCnet members are email users only -- I don't think receiving the volume of messages we generate daily with photos included would work too well for them.
The preferred methond on using photos is via the GMCMHphoto site...
http://gmcmhphotos.com/photos/
Then simply add a link in your message.
Using this added site, all how-to photos and general photos are hosted in a secure, searchable manner. Much easier than searching the forum or forum messages to find the topic and hope for photos.

Richard,
It isn't really the cost.
I' guessing the you have a broadband connection and read the forum...
Well, You may not believe this, but some of our readers are e-mail only and with DUN connections. If you add pictures, they will be cut to a crawl and if they are buying limited connection time the cost could be astronomical.
Many of the worthwhile write-ups get posted as an assembly on chapter sites. Some other get done as complete postings on the picture site.
When traveling (before I got the smartphone to tether) it would sometimes happen that the best I could get was an overloaded 802.11b connection. This was already painfully slow, but very bad when a member included a picture as part of his sig file. I had to delete his message(s) before I could get and read the others.
The very best thing to do (IMNSO), is to put pictures on the picture site with clear labels and captions so the search can find the pictures later. This is much easier than searching the messages. If you need to include more text, put a page or two of *.pdf in there.

If I had a guess, I'd say it is a question of cost. The program used here is straight out of the '90s. I've gotten used to it, but one only has to go onto other motorhome sites -
http://goo.gl/nYoGx
for example to see much easier to follow formats. Pictures are attached right to the message and messages are organized by topic.
I'm just a lurker, but the software is difficult for me.

I am perfectly happy with the current arrangement, but If Richard would
like to send me a check each month so I can get the bandwidth to fit his
plan that would be OK also. The current scheme has worked pretty well
(IMHO) for many years, and Billy's PhotoSite is a marvel of information.

These question should be directed towards Patrick as he own and runs
the GMCnet.

If the list was changed to post pictures I would miss about two weeks of
postings each month when my bandwidth would be completely used up.

All you have to do is leave him a message here on the net as he
follows the threads.

Glenn, and other Newcomers,
You probably don't realize the exact arrangement here:
The "GMCNet <gmclist@temp.gmcnet.org> was started back around 1997 by
Patrick Flowers and is still maintained by him, with the help of some
others.
A few years later, after the 'Net was well established, Eugene Mazzurana
opened the web-based "Phorum", which is an on-line mirror of the
email-based GMCNet:
http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=52
That means Patrick and Eugene both deserve our sincere thanks and support.
Working together, they enable us all to communicate in the way we're most
comfortable and which matches our equipment. There are shortcomings to
each, but together it's a hard combination to beat. Personally, I find
that I have the advantages of both by using GMail, which provides threading
which is, IMHO, much better than that on the Phorum (it's not subject to
thread "hijacking").
HTH,
Ken "On GMCNet Since '98" H.

Donation is voluntary. Contribute what you think it is worth to you.
There are links to the photo site on the forum all the time. When someone posts a picture URL just click on it. I check the photo site daily. When I click on a picture link, after viewing the picture I click on HOME to see the latest postings to the photo site. The search function works fairly well. Better than trying to search the forum.
The last count I heard on email usage vs forum was 50/50. I think it's great that we can collect both user communities the way we do. It doubles up the response rate. Sure there are a few difficulties one way or the other but they are worth putting up with considering the benefits.

Steve, if you're going to quote me why not quote the entire paragraph? You're partial quote taken out of context makes it sound like I'm complaining about a $20 donation when I wasn't. In fact, I was suggesting making the forum better by making a donation to those that provide it so that we could view pictures on it and attract new people.
|
My apologies, no intent to indicate it was a complaint, just wanted to point out to everyone that a donation is completely voluntary. Snipping of previous post is just to reference the previous message as the email system does not make that reference as easy as the forum. The main point of my post was to help clarify why the existing system exists as it does, that is both NET and Forum, with the addition of the photosite.
