In 1938 my dad ran a Shell gas station in Vermont. He sold gas 5 gal for a dollar, or 20 cents a gal.
Put that in the consumers price index website

20 cents in 1938 has the same buying power as $3.21 today. Gas has not really gone up over the past 70 + years.

But you didn't pay $$$$$$ for the land your house sits on either. It is all about ratios. We spent more on consumer items than real estate then, and labor to fix an appliance was less than to toss it in the trash and replace it like it is today. The root of the whole problem is the cost of real estate, and the cost to mortgage it. 30-yr mortgages are a crappy way of the banks making money off the masses, and let's face it, in 1938, it was a good way to do things, but it has not scaled well.

It is a matter of outlook. Many here have parents like mine - who grew up in the depths of the Depression and consequently had a morbid fear of debt which they instilled in us. In those days, one saved one's money and bought the house. People who mortgaged them were looked down upon. I never lived in a mortgaged home till my wife and I married and later built one - on a farm home loan. I got into a sidewinding deal and made some money with which we paid it off. And over th eyears as we moved about chasing jobs we parlayed the last one into the next one.
Which leads us to toys lik RVs. Since they're toys, I buy the silly things. I've no intention of borrowing money to buy a toy I can live without. Makes for a lower lifestyle, but less heartburn over the years. The GMC I could pay for, so I got it. I'd love one of the shiny Diesel pushers, but not enough to owe money on it.

It's still cheaper than four 16oz bottles of water at a convenience store.
I have yet to figure out how some Americans got hoodwinked into thinking
water out of a bottle should be worth so much.
Here at the Songer household our water is "bottled at the source" just like
some "spring water". It's far cheaper and I can go as far on a bottle of it
as I can a bottle of the stuff from the travel center.

Byron, Amen and AAAmen. Git a Brita & buy something else with your money.
S'what I do, but I live out in the country and have my own artesian well.
Shallow well pump only for water pressure. I have to shut off the water
supply ahead of the pump when I work on the plumbing, or the water keeps
coming out. Lots of minerals in the water, but no coliform or contaminants.
Test it frequently. Better than clorinated and floridated city water, in my
opinion.

For show trips, I buy the cheapest flat of bottled water I can find. It goes in the dog's bucket. I put a new cartridge in the GMC filter, and I drink/cook using the water out of the water tank, or the hose hookup if the parking space has one. I will leave to you the thought of a coated white dog in a crate with loose bowels. After once, you don't take the chance again!

HI All
Our RO system takes water from the cold line, pumps it past the membrane
then into the hot water line. It seems to work OK, we have very soft water
with some soda.
We got our unit from Costco.
How did we get here from gas prices?

yep on our last trip out we paid a high of 5.84 per gallon and the lowest was 5.29! did I mention that we have one of the largest oil refinery's in the country in our city!! have no idea how come it can be this expensive.
I was hoping I was going to win something with the highest price but I see Loffen has beaten me by a little bit. and yep it is what it is. pump the good stuff and do what you can to rid the world of fossil fuel > a tank full at a time.
