Rick,

Congratulations! I pick my first one up this coming weekend.

If you look at my messages over the last couple weeks, you will find an awful lot of fantastic information.

The folks on this forum are the reason we chose to go the GMC route.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Congrats! I just picked up mine last weekend. Already ripped out the old flooring and today installed a new cork floor. Had lunch yesterday with about 25 local GMCers! Great group! Be sure to get to know the "locals". They will come in handy for the many questions ahead.

Hey Rick;

My 73 Stretch was once a CL. Check to see if you have any tin or
metal shields over the mufflers. The mufflers get pretty hot going
over some long grades and the 73 only had plywood above them. Mine
started burning going over the Grapevine a week or so ago. No other
problems during this 3000 mile trip in which we are in the middle.
Hope yours goes as well.

Hi Rick.

Nice to see another young family on board. My kids are 9 and 12. We just bought our first GMC in October and spent a few months getting things ready. We took our first trip recently and completed a smooth 3000 mile trip down the west coast. There's lots of advice on trip prep here and on the web.

Here's a couple of links I found:

Well Rickmo,

You asked for all the advice you could get. Get ready to print whole pages. This is just the beginning.

But first - - - Welcome to the family/cult/asylum.

Where in Michigan are you (it is a big place)? You must know already that you have company.

When we used to travel with young'uns, my wife had this plan. Travel to the attraction and bivouac the night. Get up feed the kids (a seemingly perpetual effort) then head into the thing you got there to see. Walk their little legs off. (A feeding will probably be required.) Walk some more then, travel to the next attraction. Feed again and sleep. This way they are too tired to fight while you are underway. It is still advised to have underway activities planned.

As to how to plan, do have a laptop and a copy of Street Atlas, Strips and Treets (or what all)? This is essential planning and navigation software that you would do very well to become very familiar with long before June. (If you don't have one you like, try to borrow one of each before you buy.)

When you have one of those, then go to:
<http://www.discoveryowners.com/cginfo.htm> and "discover" another wealth of information (you don't need the low clearance files) of fuel, dump, ONP and such. This is an amazing resource.

When you hear the SOB owners complain that they:
Can't fit in the parking space.
The slides leak or are sticking.
The payments are eating them alive.
The climb to the coach floor is a chore.
- Just listen politely and try not to snicker.

And Finally,
I like to welcome new owners with a version of the waterman's greeting to a new vessel or owner.

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Rickmo and family

Matt

We are in Gladwin Michigan. Our interior is set up with the side dinette and bunk beds. Permanent bed in the rear. Does anyone know how much material to recover the bunks and dinette?

Thank you all for the advice and feel free to keep it coming. Our blast off date is only 5 months away Shocked

Rickmo,

Take as many weekend trips as possible over the next 5 months. That will give you the opportunity to discover and repair many many small issues that could become big problems on a long trip far away from home.
The more you use it the better and more reliable it gets.

Rick,

My kids are now 8, 14 and 18... and we bought our GMC in 2002... so we
traveled with the same age kids as yours.

The kids favorite vacations are the ones we took absolutely without a plan.
It sounds stressful at first but after you hit the road and don't have to be
anywhere, you find lots of fun and much less stressful. No plan in a world
of plans is such a relief!

They were actually talking about one at dinner tonight... We were going to
go to the Smokies, but looked at the weather forecast as we were driving
down the driveway... Thunderstorms and 95 degrees every day. In about a one
minute conversation, we changed... we just turned north out of our driveway
instead of south. 10 days later we were home after a trip all over
Wisconsin. Anytime we saw something interesting, we just stopped. Each
night we just picked a direction and tried to find a camp site some distance
away. Duck rides in the dells, go cart racing, a tiny family cheese
factory, hikes, canoe rental, many campground swimming pools, house on the
rock, Taliesin, Johnson and Wax building, rented fishing poles, laser tag,
and lots of food. We did a similar trip through Maine. It's the little
things they remember... In fact, in contrast, I don't think they have
mentioned the Disney trip since we left the park.

If I were you, I'd work on at least a little plan.
You are only an half a day from Ludington. Driving west from there is not an option.
You can take the crosslake ferry (kind of neat but expensive for and RV).
You can go north, the Mackinac area has a lot of stuff kids may like if they like history, but crossing the bridge we pay the same toll as a Greyhound because they think the coach has three axles.
You can go south, there is almost no limit there.

Enjoy the windshield time.

Rick, a few years back, My wife and I hadn't had a real vacation in 10 years
due to owning a Flower shop. We could take a couple of long weekends to the
coast or whatever. There was a floral design convention in Deer Lodge, MT
that we could attend & Mary wanted to go, so we called for reservations and
packed for an extended weekend, hopped in out new PT Cruiser and drove to
MT. After the 3 day convention, we called the shop and the employees all
said that we should take a few more days off & enjoy ourselves. Long story
short, Billings, custom made cowboy hat, Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, Sioux
Falls, Yellowstone, Salt Lake City, Bonneville Salt Flats, Reno, San Rafael,
Ca. 4100 miles without a plan & finally a leisurely trip up Hwy 101 to
Lincoln City, OR & finally home to Salem, Or. Only thing that would have
made it better was to make the trip in a GMC instead of the PT Cruiser. One
of the most relaxing vacations that we ever had, and almost no planning
involved. Other, more organized vacations that we have had were almost as
stressful as working, trying to stay on schedule. The GMC is home, no matter
where you park it.

Rick, a few years ago (29 ), I took off on my Yamaha 1100 motorcycle, with a roll up tent and sleeping bag. I was gone for 6 months, saw 33 states, and traveled 17,000 miles
Iam much older now, not sleeping on the ground any more, and bought a 1975 gmc Eleganza 4 months ago. Iam retired now, and am looking forward, this year or next. to do it all over again, but traveling in style in my Eleganza
