Monday, April 1

From Vicksburg, MI to Bossier City, LA are only 98 miles so we took it slow. Weather was still chilly and windy. A visit at the Bossier Mall was nice but on a Monday, there aren't many people visiting. A lunch at Denny's and of we went to the Diamond Jacks Casino RV Resort.

For 33$ incl tax, it is a little but nice campground next to the hotel, casino and town. Including nice bathrooms, (2) laundry and free WiFi.

We are near Shreveport. This afternoon is Landry time. In between we went for a short time to the casino ... some fun time.

BTW got a picture from Bud deGroot, who visited, Don Virta Garage in Cedar Park ... my engine and trans are almost back in place ....

Tuesday, April 2

We left Bossier City, near Shreveport this morning and drove to Tyler, TX.
On our way we visited theTexas Welcome Visitor Center and got some good information.
No rush today so after lunch we decided to stop for the rest of the day at the nice Staway .... Stayforawhile RV Park ... along this State Hwy 31E, in Murchison, TX .... R&R for the rest of this day ... the weather is beautiful today, getting warmer ....

Wednesday, April 3

From that campground, we drove this morning in the direction of Waco, TX.
Our goal was Homestead, Craft Village, North of Waco.
Free entrance! And how nice, several old buildings, barns and such a interesting place, old crafts, really nice and original handcrafted things for sale ... a really treasure, we found.

Not to forget the excellent restaurant and the so friendly people. All food all natural and at a reasonable price. We enjoyed it!
From there we only drove a little to the south west of Waco to the Army Corps of Engineers Campground, Midway.
Got a nice spot with water and electric, on the Lakeside, only 26$ and a simple but sufficient restroom facility.

http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/waco/Recreation/Camping/Devareas.asp#Airport

And BTW .... as Marjon went for a walk .... she spotted our friends, Billy and Debbie .... !!
What a coincidence, well some things has to be the way they are ... nice people are all over the world, but here in Texas especially 😉
So nice to meet them again and we will have a nice coffee or something else later on .... for sure.

Tomorrow we drive at the end of the morning those 95 miles south, to Cedar Park, where our Flying Dutchman, is waiting for us !!
We are really anxious to see him again and curious how all worked out on the repairs and rebuild ....

Thursday , April 4

We stayed at a simple RV park tonight, at Round Rock near Austin.... and went for a visit to the first US IKEA we ever visited 😉👍 .... and got me a Family Card also ... why not !?

Well they have a decent breakfast too. Even a little better then the European IKEA's have. Coffee, although drip coffee was good.

We found some useful additions for the GMC and went in the afternoon to Cedar Park, where Don Virta already was test running the engine. Later on we made a successful first test drive !

Steering good, check, hands off no problem straight! But it altered and became bad !

Engine running nice smooth and powerful, check!

Shifting good, direct and with no hesitation. Check!

Brakes, front is all redone, discs flattened, new brake calipers and pads. Check!

Tomorrow work on rears, installing the true track, AC and heather work .... and some little stuff.

Oh and a new little higher space between FiTech throttle body and manifold. Better gas-air mixture flow as with that smaller spacer ..

Still No succes on that stiff throttle pedal ... Grrrr ... Pfffff !

Transmission failure was vacuum related, governor was good no problem there, no wearing or clutch pack probs ...
Engine a lot probs, but basically it could be saved.

Crankshaft lots of visual wear and rough spots, thrust bearing, very loose single timing chain, several valves were heavily carbonated (? .... is that the right way to address it?)
Lifters were replaced, heavy duty oil pump installed, new water pump etc .... etc.... for more details see my later reports ...

For now I am "Kaput".... this walking around, talking, putting stuff back from the rental to the GMC etc, etc ... wears me a little down .... 🥴😔

Tomorrow we have to bring the rental MH to San Antonio to Cruise America ... Marjon drives that nice BIG Lincoln Pickup Truck, Don gave us to use ... 😉👍

Sunday, April 7

The problem with AC and heater ... It was in the actual vacuum switch, luckily Don had a used but good replacement unit ...
AC vacuumed, cleaned and refilled.
Working now. High vent also. As for heater the leveler only goes to 3/4 but it works !

The second more heavy test drive uphill downhill breaking acceleration etc, went very well. Nice vacuum, strong engine, temp excellent (he put in a 160 Thermostat)
Engine reached max 195 and went quickly back to 175 at idle.

With the FiTech it runs smooth and strong. But .... that stiff pedal .... moving spring didn't bring a solution either....

Steering seems good. But no Highway nor side winds testing so, we will see. both front wheel wells are insulated now.
He is doing final items and checks now ...
😄

Monday, April 8

Left in the afternoon did some last adjustments and alterations....

On the road again ....

Tuesday, April 9

...... Back in Cedar,Park, TX .... !!

Why ... well steering was really bad and as we drove of the campground I barely could turn the steering wheel... dangerously!
So we decided to try and drive e back to Cedar Park... on the road I drove e slow and noticed a sloppy driving, was it the steering box, steering pump.... tyres pressure I checked. No weird things on tyres...

After 2 hours we arrived back. And during that time I had to really fully concentrate on driving.
Don tried at first exchanging the steering box with one he had on one of his "spare GMC's"

I gave some improvement but still at turns and slow manoeuvring it was like trying to wrestle an elephant around the corner, man as if no power steer was present!

For sure the coach drove much better before!
Don told me as he had to work on the engine he noticed there was no cap on that power steering either!
Well there should have been ... that protects and keep the fluid clean .. hmmmmmm...

At 5 pm we drove to O'Reilly and got the steering pump, luckily they could get one by then for us .. so Don is now working on exchanging that too. Hopefully we can leave in the morning ...

Always a walk in the park ... 🤔🤨

Well let's go to the Panda Express. Eat and bring Don also some food, since he is working late for us ....

Daniel,

It may sound like a wild idea, but I advise you to check the top CV joint
in the steering column. If that's not properly lubricated, it will create
problems like I understand yours to be. The fix is to disassemble and
clean it thoroughly, then lubricate it with Valvoline Synpower with
Molybdenum Disulfide -- ONLY. That's worked for me for many years -- and
for many others I've gotten to try it.

No guarantees, but it's an easy fix that frequently works. Be SURE to mark
the body of the CV before disassembling it to be SURE it goes back together
in the only correct one of six possible arrangements.

HTH,

We did Ken, there was no problem.

It turned out to be a combination of wear on steering box and bad steering pump.
Don Virta had a steering box in his 23, he implanted in the Flying Dutchman.
And O'Reilly's had a steering pump by 5 pm so we could still install it the same day ...
We are on the road again, steering is better.

Although those Texas heavy wind gusts are now interfering .... sigh ...
Bye, and thanks you all for your input!
Daniel

Wednesday, April 10

Left Cedar Park this morning around 8.30 am and drove the same route as Monday, in the direction of Fredericksburg, TX.

The Flying Dutchman drove nice this time. Although strong winds and bad pavement tried to disturb its course ...
Ok, I had to steer a little more, but compared with yesterday it was very good.

A nice rest area near Johnson City, were we had special house brewed coffee (some instant coffee .... hahah ... ) and of we went to Fredericksburg were we could easily park on the big parking lot behind the Visitor Center.

This is a very nice town to visit and downtown still makes you clear, that it were a lot of German immigrants who settled here. Also lots of wineries and German restaurants.

Lots of stores with really fine and special stuff for sale.
The house kitchen of the Flying Dutchman, was good for a lunch. Although our plates almost flow of the table, the winds even became stronger!

We drove this afternoon more west ....
There were heavy wind gusts along the way, so my steering was again, concentrated, now not because of those probs we had but of those strong side winds ...

Slowly cooling down from a warm day.

Arrived at 3 pm at:

Above and Beyond River Campground
Now: South Llano RV Park
210 Old Cedar Creek Road
Junction, TX 76849

Very nice people, still recovering from a flash flood, they had in October 2019, half of the campground was washed away and rest heavily damaged 😔😢🥴
Their bathrooms are fantastic and super clean.
They are trying to rebuild it to their former state ...
Very warm this afternoon 90+ (30+ Celsius)
I renewed the big 50 amp plug and found one of the leads (red one) was not attached anymore and heavily burned ... I shortened the cable a bit and reattached it to the new plug.

Now all leads were attached properly I had good hopes the circuit in the coach that wasn't working would work again .... but no my good hopes vanished as the ice cubes in my drink I needed to recover a bit from all those activities 😉

I think internally there must be something wrong too, perhaps is that part of the breaker also gone bad ... but the rear AC works the front one not .....

Early this morning we left the campground in Junction, TX.
Still not very warm, but nice to drive, and after 2 minutes we already turned on the I10 direction west to Fort Stockton.

Not that much winds at first, but that changed rapidly, winds became more forceful and those became wind gusts 💨
Marjon got a part of it since we just changed drivers ...
Only very heavy trucks can drive still fast in those circumstances, for us you have to slowdown otherwise it becomes dangerous.

A short break in Fort Stockton, some necessary groceries to buy and searching for a shop, capable and willing to change our Flying Dutchman's oil and filter. Necessary after the first 500 miles ....

No succes, at first neither in Pecos, TX, some north of Fort Stockton, but then a nice Lowe's tire technician gave us an address and even phoned that shop to confirm we could go there in the morning 👍

So for now we are resting at a nearby Campground, the Escapees TraPark RV Park in Pecos, TX
From were we continue our travels tomorrow after that shop visit, towards Carlsbad Caverns ....

Friday, April 12

This morning we could change oil and filter in a shop in Pecos, TX (Double Z service & Supply)
It took not too long, but we got much attention from the mechanics and a few truck drivers who were there for a tire change 😉

So we drove the long and very bad road from Pecos in the direction of Carlsbad, lots of trucks, oilfield workers and there was dust, dust and dust .... along that road, of course it was free ... 😂🥴
We took a left turn so we avoided the rest of that 285, and continued on the much calmer 662, but also even more worse pavement!
Turning right to the 62/180 and drove the last miles uphill to Carlsbad Caverns.

It was possible to go all the way down by foot, in a tour guided group, or you could take the elevator, still around 800 feet down and up.
The big "Room" as they called it, turned out to be very, very big, with nice paved walkways, safety rail and very good info along that long walk, of almost 2 hours.

Back on the surface we walked the shop, got back in the MH had some coffee and drove about 25 miles south to Pine Springs Campground, a State Park Campground. Not much facilities but good for a night. With nice RV parking spots.

Saturday, April 13

Left the Guandalupe Mountains in Texas, this morning, it was still chilly so the heating that worked a bit (Krol oil has to loosen that leveler more) had to do its job, well it was enough to warm us 👍
We drove through El Paso, Las Cruses and Deming, Lordsburg en stopped in Bowie.
It seemed early but we already had to correct our watches, several times ...
.... in Bowie, AZ we found a simple but friendly RV Park, the MountainView RV Park. Not even 17$ including taxes.
Nothing fancy but sufficient, full hook ups, even pull throughs a laundry and internet ....

Sunday, April 14

Big trouble!
As I noticed last day shifting seemed stock in Two again ...
Then it cleared and yesterday no problem ... only several times as if extra sound came from engine ... trans!

This morning, very often sound from engine and trans and at one point it shifted down on Highway suddenly to second gear. I could not go higher then second.

Stopped, with help of Armand my friend, who directed me over Messenger, I got the vacume line to the transmission unclogged... I used my air compressor to blow it, after disattaching upper and lower rubber hose.

It worked and it shifted nicely, drove the last 50 miles to Tucson, but then while we were driving in city traffic, towards the Catalina SP, it started again, now only first gear.
I limped a while to get out of high traffic, now on a Parkinglot and waiting for our friends, Armand and Carol who live nearby.

Last minutes I had to shut Engine of, temp 237, oil pressure dropped from 50-40 a while 40 then rapidly to 20 so I wouldn't take a change.

This can't be happening ..... #€&&€@@€*,!!

After cooling down we managed to bring it to Calypso Automotive
Temp stayed under 210, oil 40 psi ...
In first gear, and not trying to accelerate to much it runs not bad at 20 mph.

Daniel and Marjon (who is crying 😢)

Wow! That really sucks, Daniel. Maybe it is something simple. Weird that it did fine for 500 plus miles and then started acting up again.
I have a spare core transmission that had supposedly been rebuilt before I acquited it. I wouldn't trust it though. It would need to be gone through again after sitting in my garage for close to ten years.

So sorry to hear that. Hope it ends up being an easy fix.

When they did the oil change, did they use a high ZDDP (zinc) oil, or add ZDDP? When breaking in a rebuilt flat tappet engine it’s critical these days.

We had similar problems with it randomly not shifting correctly, or at all sometimes. Turned out the governor
was dirty inside. It seemed OK when we took it out and examined it, but it turned out there was enough dirt/sludge inside to sometimes make it not move correctly, at random.
After disassembly and cleaning, light lubrication with (if I recall correctly) transmission fluid and it's worked fine ever since.

This morning we did go back to where the GMC was parked, next to the shop of Calypso Automotive in Tucson.
Got our suitcases out of the top case, started to get everything out of the coach, since we fly back to the Netherlands 🇳🇱 this Wednesday ....

At the shop they will try to address the transmission/shifting problems we had, yesterday ...
Hopefully they cure it, so the Flying Dutchman, can Fly again !

For now it is "Relaxation Time" ... 😉😄👍🇳🇱🇺🇸👋

On Marjon's Birthday, our dear friends, Carol and Armand took us on a nice trip to downtown Tucson, where we made a tram 🚋 ride, visited nice downtown streets, shops, the university surroundings and had some nice coffee latte with a bearclaw .... hmmmmm

But before that we visited our Flying Dutchman, once again to arrange some things ....

Temperature was very nice, humidity low and we enjoyed it ...
Tonight we go for a last dinner to the city, to celebrate Marjon's birthday.

Tomorrow morning we have to be very early at the airport where our scheduled flight departs at 7.20 am ....

http://members.ziggo.nl/d.w.jacobs/GMC/GMCMI%20Tallahassee%202019/TFD4.jpg

At the end a steering problem did cost us again 2 days ... Steeringbox was exchanged with one from a parts coach ... and a new steering pump ..

http://members.ziggo.nl/d.w.jacobs/GMC/GMCMI%20Tallahassee%202019/TFD5.jpg

50 miles from Tucson first time again transmission problems, only 1+2 gear ...
... I did blow the vacuum line and it was "solved" shifted again nicely ...

http://members.ziggo.nl/d.w.jacobs/GMC/GMCMI%20Tallahassee%202019/TFD6.jpg

Almost in Tucson, again trans would not shift, but now i only had first gear ... weird loud noise for several minutes and then not, a few times ... limped to Calypso Automotive, where TFD still is waiting for the final and hopefully last big repairs ...

Bye, Daniel

For a "wheel lift" wrecker to work, you have to raise the rear to full height. That worked for me.

Two weeks later ....

Here some pictures:

First week, after leaving Tucson and Jim is showing me the part he removed after he installed the blockoff plates.
... filling the gas tanks with a smile (1,99 p/gallon):

Stranded in Seguin, TX, Wheellifter did not work, backend GMC was dragging ...
... so a landoll came the next day to the rescue ...

Mac, we did as much as possible but still too low, the wrecker driver didn't want o take responsibility, be even called his manager and they decided that they would be to blame if something would be damaged ... and I agreed, there was to little clearance for that almost 2 hours drive to Cedar Park, TX

Bye, Daniel

Manual Schrader valves are the way to go. Most tow trucks have compressed
