I'm making an airport run to JFK (from NC) July 17-28. Wife and son are going to Ethiopia. I will have an 8 year old and 10 days to kill. Older son lives in Syracuse. We're planning to get him and see Niagara then drop him back in Syracuse and loop through Massachusetts.
This is a tight budget (Ethiopia trip is not cheap) and we're in a mid size SUV, tent camping and couch surfing.
Looking for off the wall suggestions.
- RV junk yards? Old cars? great flea markets? Good Road food?

Many years ago, three of us took off, went to Canada at Niagra. We camped up in the Laurentin Mountains, then camped across to the Bay of Fundy to watch the tides, then drove back down through Maine to the foot of Cape Cod where two of us lived, I came on home to Alabama. It didn't break three kids just out of high school. It's likely still a cheap trip, and pretty.

I am going to add some complexity to your schedule that I expect you will not regret.
I strongly suggest that you fire up your favorite planning software and lay this out as you can get stuck driving long distances for nothing.
Halfway between Syracuse and Niagara is Rochester. In Rochester is the Strong Museum of Play. This is great stop if you were ever a child or just know someone that was. It can easily kill a day all by itself.
If you don't have passports or such and/or are carrying firearms, you should not cross into Canada and that is were you have to be for the good views of the falls.
If you are going to loop through Massataxus, be sure to take the young one on the walk though the Freedom Trail in Boston. If they are still teaching US history when he gets to that point, he will have a connection that will make it all real to him. Driving in Boston is different. All of the east coast megopolis is insane that way.
There is really too much to see and do. But another if you can take the time is the Wood's Hole Seaquarium. This is part of WHOI (You remember Bob Ballard?) and it is (was) just an amazing place.
That is all I am going to add right now.

Thanks Matt. THat looks pretty cool.
I've lived in Boston, New York and San Juan. I am one of the "different" drivers.
Growing up in Massachusetts we were taught that our history was US history. Sure, one or two little things happened in Philadelphia and Virginia but really, America began at Plymouth. The Revolution was launched by John Adams in Boston and the war was won because of Paul Revere. Did i miss anything ?
Crossing the border is not an option on this trip.

Take a look at Windsor Vermont and the American Precision Museum. The First technology center in this country. Marvel at what these men were able to make.

On the US side of Niagara Falls, which is better btw b/c you can get much closer to the water, it's free to walk right up the edge of both falls . Lots of great photo ops. Also free, walk down into the gorge near the Niagara Aquarium and hike the trail along the rapids. Extremely scenic and exciting. Keep the kids away from the water though, accidental deaths are all too common when people fall in every summer, usually during photo-op or trying to dip their feet in the rushing water. The aquarium is fun too and not much money.
I would do the Cave of the Winds on a hot day over the Maid of the Mist. It's better and cheaper.
There's lots of history around here too, like the underground railroad, Niagara was the northern end of this as escaped slaves headed into Canada. There's Ft Niagara which was involved in the War of 1812. Arts Festivals, Jazz festival, etc, depends on when you are here. There's always a festival happening pretty much every weekend in Buffalo, any excuse to have a large gathering of people outside, usually with a beer tent and bands.
You might even want to drive them through or get out and walk around the Love Canal site, it's not in any published tour guide but worth visiting if you are interested in history or if you want to teach the kiddos something.
Just outside Niagara Falls is 4 mile Creek state park, inexpensive camping right on Lake Ontario. I have it first hand that it's very nice according to friends that have camped there.
There's also a Children's Explore and More that just opened in Buffalo. And a great zoo.
Just outside Buffalo is the Eternal Flame at Chestnut Ridge Park. Free hike, easy trail, with cool waterfall and flame at the end.
Niagara County has a great wine trail, along with a cidery, meadery, brewery/restaurant, and one excellent distillery (mine)  that's worth visiting on Saturdays and Sundays. See how to make whiskey on Saturdays.
Also very cheap and fun, if you are on I90 going through Utica, stop by and do the brewery tour at FX Matts Brewery. Call ahead for the times. Kids love it, after the tour there's delicious Shirley Temple and Root Beer in a 1920's speak-easy. Beer for the adults is included in the price of the tour, which is just a few bucks.
There's so much to do in the Buffalo/Niagara area that I'm not even scratching the surface.

Actually in Jamestown, NY - basically MY hometown. Also the Lucille Ball museum since that is close (2 miles) to her birthplace in Celoron, NY. My mom and Lucille were born the same day in 1911. My actual home was Lakewood, 2 miles west of Celoron. All on Chautauqua Lake. Chautauqua Institution, a great cultural center is on the west side of the lake.
It's a pain to find a parking spot near the museums, though.
There is an honest-to-goodness ferry that crosses the lake at midpoint that runs during months when there is no ice on the lake. It holds 9 cars, but the GMC MH could probably fit in the middle of three aisles. Probably cost the same for 2 or three cars, though. You would have to raise the rear suspension to full, since the ramps are rather steep. Best to have a look before you attempt to load the coach.
Until a bridge was built in the '70s, you had to drive around one half of the lake to make it across the few hundred yards.
