Hello everyone,

I was able to safely tow the coach home by leave the Toronado power plant in the back of the coach and just remove the axles.

I like to thank everyone who helped with advice.

Here are some pictures I thought I share and hope you enjoy.

Working on UV520. Checking the bearings, removing the rear axles and putting on the new tires I brought with me.

I have mounted the custom two bar that I had made and the new tires are sitting in front of the coach ready to be put on.

I was not able to remove the 1 and 1/2 inch nuts from the rear axles -
so I had to hire one of those mobile tire repair trucks to come out and use their large 3/4" air gun.
It cost me $105 but was well worth it to get it done and be able to leave sooner than later.

Sunday morning, July 14, 2013, I towed the coach to the hotel I was staying at for the past 6 days.
I took a shower, put my presonal stuff in the turck and checked out.

I made it to Greenwood, IN, Sunday July 14th to stay one night at the host hotel.
I met up with the Circle City Corvair Club Monday morning July 15th to carvan with members to the Kalamazoo, MI convnetion.

This is Port Huron in MI. I had to walk over to the doors to the right of the sign just behind the truck to export Ultravan #520 out of USA.

I made it home, safe and sound - Thank God, in the driveway by 8:40pm July 21, 2013.

But it is a Toronado power plant in the back and not a corvair. ggg

The Toronado conversion was one of the options the factory offered at the end of production.
I knew nothing about a Toronado FWD and that is why I posted threads here asking those in the know.
Many were helpful and not judgemental and I'm thankful for that too.

I already need:

Shop manual(s) to help me be able to work on this type of power plant.

CV boot kits with grease and clamps. (I want to keep the low mileage factory shafts. I do not want to go with aftermarket or rebuilt shafts.)

Used/bad outer CV joints - so I will not have to remove good joints from the axle shafts again; to be able to tow this coach home should it break down on us while traveling in it.

15" to 16" HD rims - to clear the disc brake calipers; so I'm able to install them. I also want to be able run tires that have a 55 to 65 psi to help carry the extra weight of the power plant and our belongings.

The GMC Motorhome Maintenance Manual has pretty good info on the engine. Download one from here:

Based at looking at the photos of your Ultravan, especially the very first one, I don't think your rims are similar to the ones on the GMC. They appear to have 5 lugnuts, we have 8. They appear to be "flat", ours have a dished surface. Hunt men's malls for replacements, 16" pick-up rims should be easy to find. Good luck with the second step of your progress.

Read your post last night. Driving towards the ferry this morning I saw an Ultravan headed south on BC 17. I've only seen them a few times. Maybe the same one. We had the Northwest Duece weekend in Victoria this past weekend and there were a number of Hot Rod Boler combo's and similar Trillium, Airstream Bambi ? the small Airstream. It has been an interesting week for those of us who like old road trip gear. My wife says "Old and crapped out like you."

Hi Tom,

Having the flat rims on the back of this coach is a problem.
They should be dished just like they were on the front of the Toronado FWD car.

The only reason I can see for even having them are because; they are easy to find and cheap rims to get, plus it at least provides something to be able to roll the coach around with.

However, I did noticed while working on the coach to get it ready to tow - that the disc brake calipers would never fit with that type of rim. And in another one of my threads on here - there are pictures - showing that the calipers are not installed.

BTW - I thought some of these GMC had other rims and that owners switched them to the HD kits with knuckles, rotors and hubs.

My question would be - did the old style hubs and rims have 8 lugs too or were they 5 lug?

All GMC's are 8 lug wheels. Perhaps rims from an actual Toronado may work, but I don' t know if they are 5 lug. GM attempted to use the Toronado wheel in very early production, but they failed, due to vehicle weight.

If I'm not able to find good aftermarket HD rims; I might get an adapter made - 5 lug to 8 lugs - if the GMC style rims will fit on the back of my coach.

BTW - does anyone know where I will find the engine ID?
I've been looking online search and have not found it yet.
On Chevy V8 you can find it behind the ALT on the right side of the block just in front of the head.
