I have an itch to visit a good friend in Tallahassee, by driving the GMC towing a small enclosed trailer with 2 Harleys. I am thinking about a spring time solo drive there in 3 days, (LA-El Paso, El Paso -Houston, Houston -Tallahassee) then the wife would fly in, and a more casual, sightsee, stop and ride the bikes kind of drive back.

We have enjoyed that sort of thing going to Sturgis, where I drove out, she flew in, and we rode Yellowstone, etc, on the way back.

She has expressed a desire to pass through Durango and see the Grand Canyon on the way back.

Anyone have good ideas for the drive back?

Thanks in advance.

The drive going through Durango is very nice. I haven't been as far east as Wolf Creek Pass (can't tell you how that is to navigate), but I have toured the area from down in Albuquerque and up to Telluride, CO. I don't know how the coach would do on the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray (north of Durango through Silverton), but that area is also very beautifyl if you like mountain driving. The Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam are certainly worth the trip, and try following some of old US Rt. 66 while it's still there. A part of Americana that is rapidly disappearing.

Life's too short to not try to see as much of the country as you can, just don't push too hard on a day's driving.

Neil,
If you get down to SE AZ, stay a while. This is truly biker country
and the destination of many throughout the state. We have a guest RV
site and a secure place for the toys.
I have been all over those areas you want to travel. There is no way
to do it without some mountains. A couple of months ago we took US 50
(Americas lonliest highway) from Pueblo to Carson City, NV. Whatta
run! Absolutely georgeous and saw lots of folks in their GMCs headed
home that way from the GMCMI convention in Pueblo. Monarch pass is
awsome and very doable in a GMC. I may never travel another
interstate again after that trip.
I remember Sturgis (60's) when people actually rode their motorcycles there:>)

Neil, we drove Wolf Creek Pass after Pueblo in October--no prob. We avoided
the million dollar highway south from Montrose to Durango and I regret
that. When we headed south from Pagosa Springs (don't miss the hot springs
there--go at night when it's cool, better if it's snowing), I talked Bob
into taking the scenic routes and we really enjoyed seeing Taos and Cimmaron
Canyons out of Taos with the fall changing of the leaves in that scenic
area. As someone said, don't drive those 800-mile/14-hour days. Slow down
and really see this beautiful country. Spring in the south can be pretty
hot, if you haven't experienced it.

These are great ideas and wonderful offers.

I have no trouble driving LA - Salt Lake City, about 700 miles. We'll see if El Paso is doable.

The direct route to Florida is a no-brainer. But I have no clue about good routes out of Florida back to, say Colorado, sights to see, places to stop. No doubt part of the fun will be pre-departure evenings at home with a map, planning.

But GMC'er ideas are solicited.

Thanks again

Neil,
Colorado 160 through Wolfe Creek Pass is a beautiful drive.
I went from East to West with a car, the drive to the summit is a steady clime at about 2-5% and some places has 8+% grade.

From the summit (better have good brakes) it's about (trying to remember) about 10 miles of 10% grade with good turns and I remember of 2 switchbacks, not tight turn.

At the first (I think) left hand switchback there's a vista place,
I don't think that you may be able to turn around in there. You might stop on the shoulder at the entrance. If you can, the view of the valley is worth the stop, and the brakes can stand to cool off.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
