Anyone know of or have any idea about a EFI for the Onan generator?

We did efi on the GMC's Onan. Video of start and run here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woA-BxJeTIk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woA-BxJeTIk
Yamaha and GM bits mixed with Crane and Megasquirt electronics most of it previously used (battle proven) stuff.

Haven't heard of EFI, but dual fuel and propane only conversions are
available. They work very well when coupled with electronic ignition
conversions.

I have 20 or so pages on our blog about the setup under Onan efi links. https://wallyandsue.blogspot.com/
Been messing with it for a few years and since we pretty much are stuck at home it got finished. Interesting fuel tune because it runs at 1,800 rpm or off. It's running fixed timing from a battle proven Ford VR crank sensor. I'm using the original carb as a air valve with the choke fixed open and throttle position sensor attached. The governor works exactly like before with the same linkage and valve.

Why bother. It is extremely accurate the way it is, and absolutely anvil
reliable.

The belt drive model (Forget the name) from Onan was offered carb or for another hundred injection. We put the injection ones in our new vehicles. Instant start in all weather even if it hadn't been run in a month or so.

I found this site with EFI kits for small engines. I don't know anything about this company or converting small engines to EFI.

I just thought it was kinda neat.

Bruce,

Thanks for that link: I really hadn't thought through the requirements to
do the job right -- it's a LOT more complicated than my first thoughts
considered!

I couldn't find a typical cost, but it's bound to be far above anything I'd
consider, since I'm not likely to ever "hot rod" anything again, much less
anything that small.

By the way, what IS the Onan's displacement?

I looked in the Onan manuals and it does not give the displacement. However the bore is 3-9/16" and stroke is 3". So that works out to 29.9 cubic inches per cylinder x 2 = 60 cubic inches or 983 cubic centimetres (CC's) so say 1,000CC's which is 1 litre.

Unless I calculated wrong, it's a bigger engine than I thought!

They show a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 993cc kit, but it comes with an intake manifold. Their universal kits show up to 800cc. Since the Onan runs at a constant 1800 rpm, a kit for a smaller engine will likely work since we don't go WOT!

My Onan works fairly well, but it is smelly. I think a catalytic converter would clean up the smell, but they are costly.

Maybe someone will chime in with the cost of a kit.

60 cubic inches displacement is what we used for required fuel calculations to get in the ballpark for start and run.

I was at burning man 2022 and the governor on my Onan 6000 got caked with dust after running 30 hours.
I think an electronic governor and some way to filter the dust without loosing cooling might solve my problem.
EFI and electronic governor should be a good solution.

I couldn't find a reference to 'Onan efi' by doing a search on your blog, and the videos were no longer available. Can you send a specific link to that info perhaps?

Cheers,
Bill
