Anyone know what a part number and source may be for the generator start/stop switch on the interior control panel? The Start side of the switch in mine is shorting itself and once pressed will not release and continues crank the starter. I do not want to have to run outside to the switch on the generator itself to get it to Stop anymore. I have found plenty of On/Off/On switches but none the same physical size. Before I break out the tools to enlarge to hole, I thought it would be worthwhile to ask the masses.
Thanks in advance for the time.

The switch may not be bad. Have you removed it from the circuit and tested it to see if it actually does stay "shorted" when you release it? Other problems can cause your issue.

I have pulled it and attempted to clean/lubricate the contacts. There is a definite 'catch' and physical resistance in moving the switch to the ON position. I got it working for a couple of weeks but not anymore.

It may or may not be the switch. It seems to be a fairly common problem that the starter stays engaged whether started from in or outside. I still have not been able to figure mine out. I don't know if it is starter, circuit board, relay or other. Right now I am just happy it runs well and makes electricity. Going to order the Petronix electronic ignition from Gary Bovee soon. I love that you can leave the points in place and switch back easily if needed.

I have swapped starters and circuit boards and still have the starter fail to disengage. I'm not sure what to try next. Planning more research.

It is easy enough to isolate whether it is a problem with the starter or a problem in the control system. While it is acting up just pull the small wire with the spade lug off the starter solenoid and see if it disengages.

If the starter stays engaged after pulling off the wire then your problem is in the starter.

If it disengages then you have a controls problem. The control board is the first culprit to check and the second is the slave relay mounted directly below the control board - it acts as an intermediate relay between the control board and the starter to prevent the high-voltage flyback pulse from the starter solenoid from cooking the small relay on the control board.

Onan starters use an inertia bendix style starter drive. They have a very
light spring that retracts or disengages the starter gear from the
flywheel. When they are dry and dirty they will hang up and not disengage
from the flywheel. The engine will drive the starter at very high speed. It
sounds like the starter motor is still running. It is turning even though
no current is being applied to the solenoid. Also, starter solenoids are
known to stick. Be sure that is not the case as well.

I will give these options a run. I am still feeling that it is the switch as I do not have the issue when starting the generator from the control board on the unit itself. Thank you all for your replies.

Remove the wires from the top row of the control board. This takes remote out of circuit. You can then test the gen locally for start -run -stop and meter remote ground wire to remote start and remote stop to test wiring and switch If flakey remove switch and test switch and wiring separately til you isolate. Push in terminals at board could be dirty as well. As far as solenoid I broke the rules and used a very light film of Synpower on moving and sliding parts. Fixed.

Gary,

I was in one of Mike Thomas's parts coaches this morning and saw a cracked Onan panel with a switch still in it. We talked briefly, and he asked if I wanted to send it to you. - Sure.

If you want this, please PM me a mailing address.

Jim, Thanks for the trouble shooting tip. I guess I should have known that. I have been pulling the wire off the solenoid spade when the starter will not release. That always does the trick. I am going to swap out the relay under the board that you mentioned. I have three original Onan circuit boards and I have swapped them around but not the relay.

Hi Steve,

Now that you know it is a controls problem rather than a starter problem you should do another step before condemning the slave solenoid. Start the machine and pull the control wire off the starter - that’ll get it to disengage so that it doesn’t get destroyed. Use a voltmeter to measure between the Onan chassis and the small control terminal that goes into the side of the slave solenoid. If you measure 12V then it is the control board that is commanding the solenoid to stay closed. If you measure 0V at the terminal then the solenoid is likely the culprit.

Those solenoids are pretty reliable so I’m betting you have a control board problem rather than a slave solenoid problem..but anything is possible and it is an easy enough thing to check.

Also
There should be no wires on the small right terminal ( read Duane's write
up)
