After a "long" trip in the GMC this past weekend my back is begging for some new front seats but my wallet is begging me not to go overboard here. The trip was only 150 miles each way and my back is still sore as hell.

We have the original non moving Orange and Tan seats. I understand the Honda Odyssey middle row seats are a quick fix, correct? Any other options that don't require a whole lot of labor to swap? Anything to stay away from? Would like to keep it reasonably priced if possible. Need to save my cash for other things that are bound to go wrong.

Some muscle strengthening?! It really helps, doesn't cost any, and will
get rid of pain in the back. "A strong back has no pain" :-)

I guess I should also note that I am 6'5" and I think a lot of the back pain comes from slumping over to see out the middle of the windshield rather than the very top.

So anything I put in will have to involve changing the height of the pedestal as well. Am looking through the photo site for some ideas but if anyone has any, I'm all ears.

Hit Wal-Mart or virtually any of the auto parts stores and get a lumbar pad to get some relief.

There also "pads' with a whole lot of "beads" that are maybe 2 cm in diameter for which some folks claim great relief! They move pressure points around almost continuously and also provide ventilation for you hiney!

Lots cheaper than new or replacement seats!

We have the Honda seats and we like them. I think they were $150 for the set. There instructions online that explain how to install them.

Trust me I have all that. Most of the pads I use make my arms go numb. I am used to making long drives without a problem but the GMC seats (and more likely the fact I am leaning over to see out the windshield) is what is doing me in here.

I'm 6'4", 250#. I was looking out the top 4" of the windshield with the
stock seats. Mine is a '73 so the seats were even WORSE than the later
years. 100 miles in that chair was pretty uncomfortable.

Chevy Astro seats. They have to armrests and adjustable angle on the
seatback. I modified the "boxes" that the '73 sits on by sectioning 2"
out of each of them and taking an extra wedge out of the driver's box to
tilt the driver's seat back for more thigh support. I've sat
comfortably between fillups (350+ miles) with no problem.

Pic of the back of the seats here:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/cockpit-renovation-2-04/p6428.html

I can provide better pics if you're considering it. Finding decent used
ones might be tricky. This was in 2003.

They've been recovered since. Gray cloth inserts.

I think I paid $50 for three seats. They are dead flat on the bottom so
it was easy to revise the bolt pattern in the swivel plate.

Some better pics would be awesome. If I sit up straight, I am looking out the top 2 inches of the windshield. I don’t think they have created a back exercise yet that will help that.

If I could just lean this seat back, I think I would be ok.

I was surprised to find that the OEM seats were designed that way. It's
not like there weren't tall guys in the '70s, for goodness sake.

Truly unusable for me. One trip is all we took and started tracking
down new seats and revising things. I can't imagine what a couple
hundred miles would have been like.

Is there anyone out there who still uses their '73 OEM seats? They sure
weren't built for someone Jared's or my size - and I've met a lot of GMC
owners who are my size. :^)

Jared,

Please post a photo on the Photo Site (or send it to me directly) of the seat bases in your Painted Desert as the type of seat bases
affects what I would suggest.

I have a set of Flexsteel seats I replaced with Honda Odessey seats. They are kind of a red/maroon solid color material and in great shape -- no rips, tears or much wear. I'd give them to you, if you could pick them up.

e-mail me and I can send pictures.

Dang. If only I lived closer to Indy than I do. Would cost me about $200 in gas RT to get them from you. Although that $200 is cheaper than some of the seats we've been looking at. You don'™t ever happen to be "passing through€"¯ Virginia, do you?

Same pedestals I have in my '73. The seats look like the early style,
too. Horrible things.

Consider having a couple inches removed from those seat bases. Not
going to matter what you put on them you're still going to be looking
out the top of the windshield. BTW, my 5'4" wife can drive our coach
just fine even though she's looking out of the windshield a few inches
lower than me

I think that will be the best thing I can do in the interim.

Jared,

I looked at photo 002985.jpg; am I correct in assuming that to get the seat far enough back to make it comfortable for your legs to
reach the gas and brake pedal you're way up on the ramp which makes you slump over so you can look through the middle of the
windshield?

If you could get the distance from the pedals like you need but at a lower seat height that would help?

Regards,
Rob M.

Leg room is perfect. No issues there at all. It's the head room that is the issue. I think the first thing I will do is remove the bases and see if I can chop off a couple inches from them. I have a welding shop nearby that does odd jobs like this so I'll throw some business their way.

Jared,

You answered my questions albeit indirectly.

What you can do is buy a set of Odyssey seats and install them on swivel bases like the ones in this presentation:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5090-seats-from-honda-odyssey.html

Those seat bases are available from Cinnabar 1-800-720-2227; talk to Steve.

They come in two heights: 8 inch and 10 inch, IIRC Steve said only the 10 were left.

The Honda seats use the built in front to rear adjustment.

Regards,
Rob M.
