Executive Summary:

Since my last email (tanks were picked up, still need to cure for another
48 hours or so) the mail ran, delivering an if-you-don't-we-will letter
from my Home Owners Association (HOA).

It would appear the limit of their patience is not quite four weeks. :)

Dana was previously okay with moving it Friday, but she doesn't like
getting a Mean Letter (something that doesn't bother me in the slightest).
"I want it moved TODAY."

Hmm. Okay. Well, that's doable, but not with the tanks installed. The
senders weren't even here yet. I just went with the plan to run the fuel
cell through the floor and into the regular system. In less than an hour,
all six wheels were on the ground, and the battery (charged, with a slight
load evidenced by a spark) was hooked up, and she ran nicely.

No noise from the belts. :) At all. :)

Rush hour traffic. Joy. Sun going down. Because, you know, I like a
challenge I suppose.

Law school classmate and pal of my my wife mocking me on Facebook: "That's
hilarious! That RV gets kicked out of every place it goes. Where's he gonna
put it now?"

Anyway. She's home now. I no longer have to be under the gun and can relax
just a hair. She's not under any impending requirements to move.

Driveway is now free again.

Plan is to deal with the remaining vent lines and tank install in a few
weels. Need to lick financial wounds, and reload the Money Gun.

Robin,

You have a keeper in Dana. That coach seems to move out nicely and it looked like it was driving well on the freeway. No heat from the bearings or tires. I’d say your getting pretty close to a good rolling rig!

Robin,

Congratulations! Both GMC's are "home."

When you walked down the driver side to put blocks under the bogie I noticed that the Onan door appeared to be open; was I correct?

It's a good idea to do a pre-"flight" walk around and make sure all the doors / hatches are closed and secured.

I would suggest you put together a TTD checklist of what you need to do to make sure your first outing in the BQ is a pleasurable
one and not a disaster.

Rob M.

Yep. Robin needs to move. Friends don't let friends live in developments with HOAs.

I've got two GMCs in my driveway. And if I had one up on blocks in the yard, nobody in my neighborhood would even think that it would be appropriate to complain.

Taxes are higher when/where the proerty values are up.

STUPID FOOL CITY SLICKERS WANT TO PAY HIGHER TAXES?

And HOAs are a waste of money. What's worse, Robin is paying the bastards to harass him.

Jared,

So you and Stefanie wouldn't mind if your next door neighbor's driveway and front lawn had a bunch of broken down half disassembled
wrecks in it?

And the back yard was full of junk that they had picked up and brought home from the side of the road?

My two cents
I will never live and put up with a HOA's
Our daughter lives in one in Henderson Nv.
She had a National League Baseball flag up during the play offs a few years ago.
She was told to take it down or pay a $25.00 fine for each day it was up.
It's okay to have a "Garden Type Flag" up.
Not the baseball flag as it would offend someone.
P C run amuck!
The funny thing the witch who had a stick up her rump about the flag is now serving time for embellishment of the HOA's funds.
We live out in the sticks with neighbors who respected each other.
I was the worst for a while.
Having the biggest mess going when I built the 50 Chevy pickup.
It took two different pickups to build one cherry pickup.

I believe restrictive covenants have their place, in theory. In practice
they very often cause problems and don't necessarily preserve home values.

Some day I will have a place out in the country, or a commercial building I
can use as my own Bat Cave.

Well lessee....
A GMC beside the house in the drive so I can keep it powered.  An SOB beside that.  Till I sold it, another GMC out back on a pad.  Next door neighbor has an old Chev Nova in the back corner of the yard waiting for him tio find an engine anf=d rehab it.  Guy behind me parks his two RV trailers along my proprty liner on his driveway, I added a break in the fence so he can turn them around when he heads out.  Guy on the other side of me just bought the place for roughly $600 Large U.S.  That's mansion prices where I live.  None of us mind, we figure a man's home is his castle.  We also had the presence of mind to buy housing where there's  lot of room, so people don't have to look at the neighbor's house if they don't want to.  We Southerners with Appalachain roots are, as you may of noticed, independant souls.
There is a new subdivision around the corner from us which has, if you can beliebve it, restrictions on the size dog(s) one may own among other things.  I make it a point to walk the BWDs there regularly.  No one who lives there that I have been able to find is from the rural Southeast originally.  Different regions tend to have different cultural values, these folks think it normal to be told how to live and what kind of front door they may have on their homes.  It did come as a shock to a couple of them to find that they cannot control who walks on the public streets and highways with their pets.  It was a source of some merriment to another one or two to watch me pick up after the dog, something they don't seem to do.

Can't agree, except in Houston, perhaps.  Basic zoning laws are sufficient - and even those have run amok forjm time to time in place to place.

Of course not. Its their property.

Same as previous answer. If it spills onto my property, then I would have a reason to object. This was once a free country. Attitudes that neighbors have some kind of right to enforce their property maintenance philosphies on each other is absurd.

That's what a good neighbor is.
Imagine that, not being able to control who walks on the public side walk.

Obviously Robin's HOA has no taste. I think a GMC sitting in the driveway in no way hurts the property value. In the year that I've owned my coach, I have had several people knock on my door and ask me to show it to them. Anytime one of my neighbors walk by they are anxious to see what progress we have made on the remodel. I have never heard a complaint and I live in a neighborhood where pride of ownership is obvious. Before buying my current house I was ready to put an offer on a property with an HOA. After learning that they had covenants concerning motorhomes, (I owned a Bluebird Wanderlodge at the time) I immediately changed my plans. I just don't need the hassle.

We have similar problem every few years when someone moves in from Chicago. They think they have the right to tell others what they can and can not do. In one case a new "Chicago type" moved in called the police because my neighbor was shooting a shot gun on his own property. The newby was informed that this was normal activity around here and he would have to move back to Illinois if he wanted those types of restrictions. After his complaint we went out every Sunday all summer and had target practice on my and my neighbor's land.

Another new neighbor called and complained his neighbor was living in his diesel pusher SOB on his own land. The complainant was told that as long as the vehicle was licensed and roadworthy there was nothing to complain about. The SOB owner lives on his property here is the summer and goes to Texas in the SOB in the winter.

We do not appreciate those types around here and encourage them to return to Illinois when necessary. It took us about 5 years to re-educate my next door neighbor after he move here from Illinois. Most people around here live on 3 to 20 acres. It is 1/2 mile to the house behind me. It is 300 feet one way and 900 fee the other way to my next door neighbors. I share a driveway with the 300 foot neighbor.

It is a different culture than living on 60 foot wide city house lots.

You're taking a extreme view Rob. Of course most of us would not want to live next to a hoarder or junkyard or chicken processing plant, etc. But, most HOAs take things to an absurd point. For instance you can't fly certain flags, or plant certain plants, or park a car on the grass when you have a dinner party, or paint your house anything but 'approved colors', or park your guests cars on the street, or any number of stupid things.

I lived in a HOA environment ONCE and tilted at that windmill at every opportunity. We had a window over the kitchen sink that faced directly west. The afternoon sun was a killer so I made some cedar lovers that blocked the sun and painted them to match the house trim. Lot looked great and several neighbors asked me to build them some. Got the 'screw you...hate letter to follow' mail from the HOA witch the next week. I did everything in my power to make that power hungry witch miserable for the remainder of my time in that particular hell. My favorite was signing her up for 'bill me later' magazine subscriptions to things that would embarrass her and then drop a note in the neighbors mailbox asking her to pick up her mail... I have an evil side.... Smile that reminds me, I need to sign her up for Bondage Babe again... Smile

One normally goes directly to the neighbor around here, assuming there's a problem at all.  The guy next to me used to load up on (illegal) fireworks every New Years and 4th, and set them off which the BWDs hate.  However, the BWDs bark if they're in the yard and he comes out.  He's never said a word about this, and I can put the dogs up two days a year.  He who goes along gets along.  It surprises me that the same people who are friendly anf good natured in an RV park. and who always are entranced by the GMC, want to go home and set the John Whammers on the neighbors.  I shall stay in the pellagra ridden South, we don't seem to transplant well at all.

That's the crusx of it.  I can unelect a power mad county commissioner - and have - and get someone more rational to amend zoning laws.  People who have the misfortune to be under the auspices of an HOA haven't that avenue really.

As I reread this I note it could be construed as a slam on GMCers.  It isn't, merely a poor choice of wording.
