a few weeks ago. I had the governor gear go bad.

I replaced it. test drove it. and all seemed good.

I just drove about 65 miles north. Pulling a pretty decent size trailer(maybe 3000 pounds?). and boy, there is just no real get up and go.

i was having a tough time figuring out where it was shifting when I was driving. but I could get it to go 55-65 MPH. but going faster then that it seemed it just didn't have the power.

I stopped on one hill. and boy did it take alot of throttle to get it to go. also now when I got here, we are in a grassy field. and it really takes alot of throttle to get moving. just seems.

I have towed this trailer before, and I know it had more zip then.

I do not think the tranny is slipping at all. I have driving slipping trannys. and this is not it.

tranny fluid and filter were changed about 1500 miles ago. and the level/color is good. could I have a gear particle blocking something?

any thoughts about easy things I should try before I head home. I am just having to take it easy.

do not have a real option of test driving it until I get home without the trailer.

seems to be more tranny related, but it could be engine snuffed out.

just wondering while we are out on site relaxing. what I could check.

thanks,
Jon

You may have brake or brakes dragging. Drive it a bit and either shoot the rims with a temp gun or carefully lay a hand on each hub cap and compare temperatures. Any hotter than the rest indicate a dragging brake. Does the trailer have brakes or a break away switch? Check those too.

Electic brakes on trailer. I checked. Nothing dragging.

What about the coach? Did you forget to release the emergency brake or could it be dragging if you did. They often get sticky.

Jon,

What about vacuum and mechanical advance on distributor? The mechanical weights can/do rust and stop moving -- gives rather doggy performance.

Are the carb secondaries opening? There is an interlock to prevent them from opening when the choke is not fully open.

blocked carb filter, plugged exhaust, intake manifold crack, exhaust manifold crack... hmm, what else have I suffered that killed my get up and go? bad gas? There's a lot to rule out on this one.

What Ken said. With a stock final drive it is hard to even get to 60 mph
with the secondarys not opening. Should be very audible if they are
working. If your mechanical advance is stuck, this would also happen.
Fuel economy would also suffer if you had no mechanical advance. Replacing
the governor would not be an issue here. Fuel or spark.

Y'all find a good answer -- not including secondaries. Sounds just like my
Stihl KombiTool which I've filled with new fuel/oil, replaced the spark
plug, rebuilt the carburetor, cleaned the air filter, replaced the
carburetor flange gasket, replaced the carburetor, replaced the air filter
-- still just about the same as before I started: Starts pretty easy, runs
rough, and won't spin fast enough to engage the centrifugal clutch to drive
the replaceable attachments. :-(

Not allowed to be ignition -- their ignition module costs about as much as
the whole tool.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is a stuck power valve. Remove the air cleaner. Insert a screwdriver into the front vent tube. Very lightly push down. The power valve should move down 1/8-3/16" then spring back when you raise the screwdriver. If not it is stuck and must be freed up.
Good luck

I recently had a carburetor problem and tried to use a screwdriver to test the movement of the power valve. When I gently pushed down I felt something give and the screwdriver went through the thing I was pushing on. I took the top (air horn) off the carb and found that I had poked a (harmless) hole in the gasket between the top and body of the carb. It turns out that anything that was not completely round was not able to push on the power valve because it was so close to the front of the vent tube that only a round tool would work. I ended up figuring out the the best tool is the stud that holds the air cleaner on. Just unscrew it and use it to push down in the front of the vent tube - if you look closely with a flashlight you can see the top of the valve in the tube.

I think Dick Patterson says to use an Arby's Drink straw to try the power valve thing. (Or maybe it was Wendy's I'd have to go back and dig out my notes from Goshen last year, which I ought to do anyway).

I think any straw would work as long as it fits into the vent tube - just press it against the forward edge.

Back to the governor gear. Is the trans starting in first and shifting through all 3 gears. Can you shift it manually? Sounds like you are starting in 2.

Armand,

This is just one reason it is good to go to tech sessions with the likes of Dick Paterson. At the last one I attended, he was very clear that the special tool to do this check could be acquired at Wendy's and it looks a lot like a drinking straw....

Well. I did the bolt that held the air cleaner on to check that valve. Not sure now if i checked the right one. All i know is the valve didnt spring right. And the result was just like i just got the float needle stuck open. Lots of fuel flooded the carb. And had to call aaa.

Carb needs a rebuild anyway. Gaskets all are old looking. So coach is back in driveway, and time to deal with carb.

On another note. I think maybe it was stuck in second. That seems like how it was acting. And i notice that it looks like governer spun a little. There is circle scrape mark on top of goverener where latch holds it.

Fix carb first. Then will see where we are at.

That is exactly what happened to me. I pushed through the gasket that has no apparent function just floating around the power valve and the piece that protruded from the bottom of the gasket pressed down on the float and gas just flooded into the carb. I used the maintenance manual instructions for removing the top of the carb (the air horn) and reassembling it. I reused the same gasket because all that was wrong was the piece protruding onto the float. When I had it apart I hosed it out with carb cleaner and reassembled and it is working great. Give it a try, it is easy. Here is a link to my blog entry for that day http://minniebiz.com/gmcmotorhome/?p=1540

I do not see how one can get those metering rods to stay in the correct place putting it back together.

will be talking to my carb guy this week. going to for sure pull the carb off and get it on the bench.

what you described is exactly what happened to me.

There are complete instructions in the maintenance manual. Just follow them step by step. I took photos of the detail along the way so I could see what I started with. Was not hard and took me about an hour.
