Hello all,

Our ignition switch lock cylinder failed. The key will not go in the cylinder all the way. The ignition switch cannot be turned without the key in the cylinder all the way.

The shop manual says to remove the steering wheel etc, put the key in, turn the switch to the RUN postion, push a tab down and withdraw the lock.

We can't turn the lock to the Run position. Anyone have experience with getting the lock out without a key in the cylinder?

(This was really an opportune failure as we were all packed and ready to go out the driveway on a trip. Failure occured in the driveway.)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I am not trying to be smart.
Call a locksmith. He can probably determine why your key won't fit.
A good one can work wonders.
Here in Texas fee is around $75.00 to $100.00.
Daughter lost key. Locksmith came out and made a key.
Charged $75.00

Might have more detail than the shop manual. I used those instructions to remove the lock from a coach with no keys.

If you cannot get a key to fit in then you can always just pull out the lock cylinder the same way that car hijackers do. Get a slide hammer (such as used for pulling dents.) These have a screw in the end. Screw it in when the key goes and just use the weight to jerk out the cylinder goes. You can then use a flat blade screw driver instead of a key to turn the lock.

If the lug on the cylinder breaks off without breaking the housing then it is simple to get a new cylinder keyed to your key and just slide it in place and it will lock in. If, however, the housing should break then you will have to pull the steering wheel to get at the cylinder housing.

Emery, how would someone who is a well schooled individual like you possibly
have learned skills like that? Hint, it is much faster if you use the slide
hammer to insert the screw into the tumblers too. Couple of quick strokes
each way usually does the trick. I didn't work in a prison all those years
without learning a trick or two.

Success!

Thanks to all for the advice.

Dave, the url you provided was the key to success.

I removed the lock cylinder and we are now up and operating using a pair of long needle nose pliers for a key. A new lock cylinder is on the way from Cinnabar.

We are off to the Florida State Studebaker meet in Crawfordville, Fl.

Thanks so much to all.
