What are the tell tail signs of bad front wheel bearings?
I have a '75 Palm Beach with 80,000 miles and I am suspicious about a
squeaking noise from the pass front wheel.
The noise does stop with a firm application of the brakes, but does
return after a short time.
This is my first experience with a front wheel drive anything so I do
not know what to expect.
Any help or guidance is appreciated.

Sounds like it is from the brake pads.
Bearing people tell us that the life of a bearing is for ever as long
as it is taken care of properly.
There are too many variables on our unit.Seals failing and grease runs out, etc.
I would find someone that has a track record of working on the front bearings.
It is not complicated , but have seen top mechanics ruin it.

William,
I would check the following things in the order listed:
1) brake pads dragging - caused by
a) brake line internal failure
b) piston seizing
2) outer cv joint (when was it last lubricated?)
3) wheel bearings (when was it last lubricated?)

Bill..
The fact that it stops when the brakes are applied is a good indicator to me that it is the brakes... There is a metal tab that touches the rotors when the pads are getting thin.. They stop touching if the brakes are applied.. So first thing Jack the front end up and pull the RF wheel.. If that is where you are hearing the noise.. Then the thickness of the pads is VERY easy to see..If you haven't had the wheel bearings serviced in the recent history.. Probably would be time to schedule that and have one of Jim K's Zerk installations done.. But it probably isn't a failure in the bearing making that noise!

I have the identical problem with my Birchaven at the moment... I have become accustomed to wrenching on my rig myself, but have never done brake pad replacement.
Is this something I can tackle on my own? Any tips would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks everyone!

Brake pads are easy. Just like most GM cars. Replace them before they wear into the rotors. The rotors are expensive and a huge job to replace.

When my GMC needed bearings it was all over the road. It was sloppy, and swagged alot at high speeds. It was easy to tell something major was going wrong something that brakes wouldn't of done.

Well you really won't know until you look. My bearings were supposedly serviced 5K miles ago, had the receipt to prove it. The hub self disassembled when I removed the knuckle to R+R the A arm bushings. Both sides were loose.
Morale of the story, until you see it with your eyes, you don't know.

60% of the people that service front bearings never check the Knuckles
and blame the bearings.

If it would be ok, I need to annouce that I have over 200 front
bearings that I need to move now.
They are Timkin and I need to reduce the inventory. $73 each side.

Sorry, one other thing, if you check for heat everytime you stop and feel
no up/down movement in the assembly when you check I would drive on it.

I will do just about any repair work on the GMC
I won't do front wheel bearings. Too much specialized knowledge. Too many special tools.
But to the OP I would not suspect bearings, it sounds like pads to me too
