Phil,

Your feeling is correct: I filed the rough-cast iron plugs provided by
Edelbrock until they fit tightly when tapped into the head with a ball
peen hammer. That was more care than suggested by Edelbrock's
instructions. They made no mention of drilling nor of welding. I've
heard of several others, and know one personally, who followed those
instructions also. None of them were as lucky as I -- they learned the
error of Edelbrock's ways when the water began to leak into the exhaust
& vice versa.

I'll keep reminding people to not make the same mistake.

Well the plugs have been in for almost 6 years now and they are still pefect. I did weld them in and drill 1/4 inch holes in them and they still look exactly like the day I installed them. I have a feeling that the guy that posted the pictures just stuck them in without welding and they eroded and caused problems. Mine haven't moved at all except for the normal expansion and contraction of cast iron. I think the plugs are perfectly fine, just a poor installation in the case of the pictures. Not going to pull mine. Slapping the manifold on after I check the fit, which I think was starting to suck some oil into the intakes. No smoking gun found though.

Here are the results of the test of the ATF/Acetone verses PS/Acetone.

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=31377>
or
http://tinyurl.com/yleyudk

Although neither material mixes into a homogeneous solution the ATF/
Acetone combination does not separate very rapidly as compared with
the PS/Acetone combination that separates almost immediately after
shaking.

I have not yet tried the AFT/Acetone mixture, but I have several
friends that use it and swear by it.

The pressurized sprayers are the best solution when using this mix as
Bob & Terry have suggested.

Harbor Freight also sells cans like that:

*ITEM 1102-DAA **http://tinyurl.com/yg5587q*
*ITEM 65297-DAA **http://tinyurl.com/ygb46m8

Seem to be only available in the stores (harborfreightusa.com) and not
On-Line.

You can draw your own conclusions!

Isn't that odd - I'd always thought that power steering fluid and atf were the same thing. Of course this was 15 years ago...

i posted this here and on another forum awhile back and got replies that ATF and acetone won't mix. i also got a reply that the test was done with power steering fluid not ATF.

Let me throw this into the mix. Another forum I participate in said specifically FORD type ATF will not mix with acetone. GM type was OK. I do not know as I have never tried any of them.

You did it the right way the original instructions were a tight fit (wrong way). Bummer that you went thru the trouble of pulling the manifold for a look see.
