Twice my mail box has been run down by drunks so I fabricated a new
one out of 3/16" steel plate and welded it on a 6" steel pipe and
welded the pipe to a GMC rim. Last night the Sheriff stopped in to
give me my mail. Seems that someone hit the mailbox again. They didn't
make it too far because the rim was rolled up under the vehicle and
punched a hole in the oil pan evidenced by the trail of oil leading
away from the mail box. I love it!! Going to spend this morning
fabricating another.<VBG>.............Terry

Our solution, at the cabin...

55 gallon drum, buried flush in the ground.
6 inch pipe, drum depth plus proper mailbox height with 3/8 inch box mounting plate with pour hole in center welded to top.
fill drum and pipe (thru pour hole) with concrete.

Why, you ask. Post also doubles as a gate post which the locals, who don't want us there, kept destroying or pulling out of the ground and carrying away. Not anymore.

So *that's* what I can do with my big pile of old rims.
I was wondering what to do with them... :-)

Sounds like CSI were the mail box owner filled it with cement & when the vandals hit it with a base ball bat he had his arm broken.

My son made a heavy duty mailbox and the Hiway Dept removed it.
"It would damage the snow plow", he was told.

That is why the rim just sits on top of the ground. My intention was
that if it was hit again they would just knock it aside and I could
roll it back into place. Evedently it was pretty well stuck under the
car (truck?) and was drug three blocks before it punctured the
transmission oil pan and spilled oil for 6 more blocks. Only thing I
can figure is they must of had a friend come tow them home. I went up
and down the streets and couldn't find him............Terry

Unfortunately, in these "Politically Correct" days, many states have
laws against such defensive tactics. When SHE wanted a brick mailbox I
looked into the relevant ordinances. I was shocked by the
restrictions. I don't recall them now, but they included such things as
limitations on the size of the post, etc,. intended to prevent damage TO
THE VANDALS. :-(

In fact, I think they specifically excluded the type I like best: a
heavy steel box mounted on an arm from a heavy steel post, arranged so
that the arm always swings back to the correct position even after being
hit (and perhaps swinging all the way around to attack the striker from
the rear).

Don't get yourself successfully sued. From Terry's experience with the
sheriff, apparent that's not a problem in WA. Congratulations!

In Michigan that a big problem, lawsuits. In this county when the speed
limit is over 35 miles you are restricted to how heavy a structure you can
have to hold your mailbox as it might hurt someone running into it, also if
the snow plow.

Not a problem. We are at the end of the public road. Anyone doing over 25 mph will go thru the barricade at the end of the road and end up in an 80 foot deep ravine, which all the locals know about. Also, since it is a minimum maintenance road, anyone driving over 25 mph is really punishing their vehicle, not to mention themselves.

The road is not plowed in the winter. Snowmobile, skis or snow shoes are the only way to the end of the road.

I had a drunk run off the road and hit one of my trees. The sheriff left the vehicle in place until morning. They call me in the morning and asked me if I wanted to keep the vehicle or if they should have it towed away.

I did not have much use for a smashed up Buick so I let them tow it.
