I'm in the process of replacing my old Onan generator with a Generac Primepact 50. As the Hondas are NLA, it seems like a rational choice and was nicely priced. I would like to get rid of the old, falling fiberglass insulation that is currently lining the compartment. What is the reccommended lining material for the compartment? I've seen pictures of what I think is the foil faced rigid fiberglass insulation, but wanted to be sure before I start buying something that won't work.
Also, I think that the compartment is lined in an aluminum box (my coach is a 75 Palm Beach if that makes any difference), but I'm not sure as the insulation is still in place. The Generac installation manual states you should have a sheet steel lining, not aluminum. Has anyone has experience with this?
ps. Removing the old Onan is a very messy job when it has 35 years of oil and mud on it!

I think I paid $80 for a 4x4' piece of aluminum laminated heat insulation 1/4" thick from NAPA . I used Permatext gasket sealer in a spray can to glue it. Cut the pieces. Spray the brown stuff on the coach surface. Let it dry for 5 minutes till its tacky. Fit the piece and snug it up. Aluminum side up. Use a whisk broom to put pressure all over the piece for a few minutes till it sets up good. For the roof of the compartment I cut a piece of thin plywood to match. After I sprayed and placed the piece I held it up with the plywood and braced the plywood up with a 2x4 so I didnt have to hold it. Left it overnite. That was summer of 2008 its still holding.

Hi, If you have space use a layer of 2lb per square foot lead sheet. Should
be available from most good industrial supply places. Then a layer of 1/2"
foam carpet underpad, then a layer of acoustic ceiling tile. Attach all this
with spray adhesive, fender washers and screws. For the last layer I used
foil faced underfelt from an auto upholstery supply place. I glued this on
and then used some screws and fender washers. My 50G is pretty quiet inside
the coach. Of course the 6 inches of foam mattress over top helps quite a
bit as well.

Gary,
Man you really muffled that critter! I use 1 lb. sheet goods and it did a great job on the Honda unit. I may have to go to the 2 lb. goods next for the air cooled models-- we'll see. That seemed to be enough not doing anything else. The compartment gets pretty small as you add insulation.
You are doing what we do though, the stuff has 1 layer of chrome mylar for heat, 2 layers of foam and the nylon/lead layer for sound. All in all it does a great job.
