G'day,

As noted earlier we use the Verizon 4gb / month plan and have NEVER even come close to hitting that mark. However, we also have
Direct TV satellite so we don't stream movies.

Even at home here in Australia I have a 5gb / month plan and have NEVER even come close to hitting that mark.

Is there any reason to get a plan larger than 4 -5 gb other than to download / watch movies?

Regards,
Rob M.
Sydney, Australia

During our recent trip of 3 weeks, we were pretty heavy (in our terms) internet users and only used 4.235 GB of data. We don't watch Netflix etc. on trips. I end up switching back and forth between the different data bundles depending on our travel plans. I see no sense paying for more data and hot spot capability when not traveling. With AT&T I had unlimited data and had tethering. Too bad AT&T's network didn't work out for us or I might have stayed with them.....Well maybe not. I was with AT&T for two years and switched back to Verizon the day my sentence was up.

AT&T...Your World...Undelivered.

At first glance, Walmart's deal sounds good. However, it might be quite a bit slower. Speed and coverage and is what I am looking for.

Verizon's website.
"Verizon 4G LTE wireless broadband is 10 times faster than 3G—able to handle download speeds between 5 and 12 Mbps (Megabits per second) and upload speeds between 2 and 5 Mbps, with peak download speeds approaching 50 Mbps."

<https://www.verizonwireless.com/insiders-guide/network-and-plans/4g-lte-speeds-compared-to-home-network/>

In my testing I found Verizon 4G LTE speeds to be in the 12 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload range as advertised.

Internet on the GO: FAQ
"As long as you are in a strong coverage area, average download speeds will range from 600-1400 Kbps, peaking at 3.1 Mbps and average upload speeds will range from 350-500 Kbps, peaking at 1.8 Mbps."

<http://support.internet-go.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/9/3/download-and-upload-speeds>

Internet on the GO seems to be quite a bit slower (their specs not mine), but I have not tried it.

Verizon is 4G and Internet on the GO: is 3G.

Richard,

Your comments below reminded me of something.

The Verizon 4G LTE reverts automatically to 3G and then 2G when 4G is not available. I found that quite frustrating at times when I
was in an area that was at the edge of their tower ranges. I wound up attaching remote modem antennae to the Winegard Batwing
antennae and cranking it up, that helped a bit but sometimes it didn't.

The bottom line is that one should NOT expect a 4G connection 100% of the time.

That's a good point to remember. Even with our "Wilson Sleek 4G-V Cradle Booster for Verizon LTE" plus a "Wilson Electronics 301103 Tri Band (800/1900 MHz) Magnet Mount Antenna", there were a few times when the signal did go down to 3G or worse.

However, we had 4G most of the time during our tour. 100% of the time we had some sort of usable signal which was a pleasant surprise. I'm sure things would be different in more remote places such as the Georgia wilderness.

My kids do online gaming. But I do not have a wireless internet plan so they have never played while traveling. That would get you over 4 - 5 g in a few days.

Probably not applicable to most folks here.

FYI, my CFO watches movies and TV shows a lot. 20 days into the last billing cycle, I got a note from my ISP that I was over the 150 g allowed in the plan (I thought the landline DSL was actually unlimited). The note said next time it happens I will get billed $10 when it goes over 150 g and $10 for every 50 g after that.

I had the same problem for over a year at my house in Santa Fe when I first
got my iPhone. At that time the only carrier was AT&T. I purchases an
amplifier that had an antenna on the roof with a cable that led down to my
main floor and plugged into a rebroadcasting box with an 8" antenna that
sent a signal throughout my house. It not only worked with AT&T but with
other carriers as well.

This cost about $200 but worked great. I didn't need it when I moved to
Colorado so I have it to. Bill Bramlett as he had the same problem in his
house. If you need the name of the device let me know

AT&T wanted me to get one of those, probably to stop me from calling and complaining about their poor service. I thought about it until I read the fine print that said "Connects to your broadband Internet service to create a strong, secure, sharable 3G signal in your home". MMM.... so they want to use my broadband connection, who I pay a different ISP, to fix their crappy network? No way! To top that they wanted to extend my contract by two years to cover the extra hardware or pay $200 (IIRC) for the cost of their Microcell.

2 years ago I got a Virgin Mobile Hotspot from Walmart. Anytime I would be traveling I would sign up for a Data Plan, normally $20 per month. Sounded good. Unfortunately, Sprint was the carrier and reception was iffy at best.
Since, we got iPhone 5c's with AT&T, 2 phones, unlimited shared phone and text and 2gb data on a family plan for $90/month total. It used to be they would also charge for tethering but now they don't. You can also change the data plan monthly based upon the need.

I think Verizon may have better coverage, but at the time tier similar plan was considerably more.

Tony

It seems like AT&T is getting more competitive with their pricing, at least that is what it looks like on their TV ads. I think they have to considering how unhappy so many people are with their service. I would have stayed with them if their network actually worked where I spend most of my time. if you are one of the lucky ones that are positioned in a location where you can get good service, it might be a good deal.

Up and down the I-5 corridor, A T & T offers the premium service. There are
pockets of poor service in the same area with Verizon. I gave up on free
wifi. I use a Samsung 4G cell phone with a wireless hot spot. If I have a
cell signal, I have internet. Both on my laptop and cell phone. I took my
batwing antenna off the coach. It leaked like a sieve. We almost never
watch TV in the GMC. Good conversation with our GMC friends is part of the
fun. Otherwise we are sleeping or sumthin.

No, that AT&T thing is an entirely different thing alltogether.
What I was using is a repeater -- that is it will pick up the telephone carrier's signal (AT&T, Verizon, and others) and rebroadcast the weak signal that I could get at my room to the rooms down lower in the house.

I know what the Microcell is and it just connects through your computer and acts as a hotspot within your home for the AT&T system.

With the ZBoost system it doesn't need a cmoputer but just amplifies the telephone signal and rebroadcasts it in the house.

Sully,

I bet what Jim is saying is that he uses the Samsung as a hotspot that he can then access with what ever he needs. If one has Verizon service, you can use their hotpot for 30$/mo. I don't know about AT&T.

I have been with Verizon for years strictly because of their coverage around the Great Lakes. I have also always used either Easy-Tether (first - USB only) and have used Fox-fi to make a hotspot free of Verizon charges in recent times. Be aware that if you use your phone to be a hotspot or even USB tether, you had best be ready to power it (most USB ports are current limited) because it will suck the power up fast.

The repeater in the house is a ZBoost and the one in the coach is a Wilson. Both are too old for 4G, but that doesn't seem to matter much. If we are underway and I loose the 4G, I am probably about to loose the 3G even with the repeater.

Thanks Matt. This off road season got sacked when my boy broke his wrist in Idaho a month ago which has the silver lining of giving me more much needed time for finishing the coach before next season. The boy will miss a fair amount of school with travel so I need to be able to turn windshield time into class time and these days that means computer plus internet.

I have 2 Zboost boxes, one at home at one at our cottage. They seem to work OK which allowed us to have minimal AT&T service at both places. We don't really need them with Verizon. We keep them going for our AT&T friends and cottage renters.
