Check the load on the brake light circuit. Trailer wiring will add load when the trailer is there, and extra sources of problems all of the time. Best to use relays for long distance trailering, but of course that adds complexity, and future failure points if not done correctly.

Put your ohmmeter on the cold side of the brake switch and see how little resistance to ground there is on that circuit.
