Has anybody replaced the clear plastic faces of the speedometer and/or fuel gauges?
Mine are pretty clouded -- makes it hard to read them, especially at night.
I tried some plastic cleaner/polish, but it didn't help much. Replacement seems
to me the only option, but I'd really rather keep the original instruments.
Pointers appreciated. Don't want to destroy them...

thanks

Those are glass, not plastic. I took mine apart and cleaned the back side--they were pretty "fogged" up. What a difference! You will need to pull the 2 clusters out and undo the crimp that holds the glass in--not a bad job.

The lenses were pretty scratched on my 78, so I removed the plastic wood surround from the donut then bent the tabs holding in the lens which was plastic and removed them. Tried cleaning but that didn't work so I went down to a local glass shop and they cut me two out of 1/8 glass for about $25. I reinstalled, bent tabs back reinstalled the plastic wood surround and I was in business. Much clearer than the plastic lenses.

So yours were plastic. That makes me wonder if someone replaced mine with glass in a previous life!

Oooh, shiny! :-)

Pretty sure mine are plastic too, but I guess I'll find out when I pull them.
I love the way your dash looks. I'm currently building a cherry ply face to
replace the beat up original, and was debating whether to include the lighted
labels on the left side. From yours, I can see it looks great with just a stencil label,
very clean.

thanks!

Karen,

Don't forget that new labels and the fiber lights - long enough for the right side of the dash too - are available, and easily installed.

It's a feel-good project that you'll see any time you are driving with your lights on.

Thanks. The letters actually light up on both sides of the dash (they are lit in the picture and look white with the lights off). I was going to do my own bezel too, until I found out last spring that Mac (www.custominstrumentpanels.com/gmc.htm) was making a replacement bezel at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, his price has since gone up about 25%.

Yes, Wally Anderson has replaced the plastic with real glass. I know there are photos of it in the photo site. Look up Wally Anderson's photos. I think they may be kind of jumbled in some other things, but I know they are there. And the look was great with the glass rather than the plastic.

Wally? can you locate them?

wow, what a shock, they have been such a great vendor for us over the years,
I had no idea they were moving. Glad I got my new dash panel for the 23.

guess they won't be coming to our rallys here any more.....

bummer, but I guess the good news is they are still in business.

life goes on, sometimes without us

Here's an idea you might want to try -
If the scratches disappear when you wet the surface then you can spray/coat the surface with high gloss clear acrylic.
I've used this trick for foggy/yellowed composite head lights.
Good luck
