I asked this earlier but I think it may have gotten lost in the many responses to the original thread. I presently have an Edelbrock carb on my '77 Eleganza II. It also has headers. It runs great, especially at highway speeds (55-65 mph). The coach averages 8.1 mpg. I have the original carb but it probably needs rebuilding. I have no interest in returning the coach to original. Is their any advantage to rebuild the carb and swapping out the Edelbrock? It almost seems like the answer may be: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". Thanks for any replies.

Bob;
The only advantage I can see is if you have a raised hatch that you trip
over, you could get rid of it. If you have the original intake manifold
and OEM hatch cover, why touch the carb.
Have you considered selling the original carb as a core and spending the
money on the GMC?
Cores are getting scarce and some fellows really need them.

Hey Bob;

I have an Edelbrock carb on my coach, and it works just fine (at
least compared to the original carb that was on my 76 PB), and it gets
around 8mpg also. I am going to change it in favor of the Howell Fuel
Injection system. The Edelbrock will wind up on my brother's 76 PB,
cause his carb is a pile.

My PO also installed an Edelbrook on my '78. (With a 403.) It seems to work fine and gets good mileage but I have not checked it with an O2 gauge. (I DO still have the original carb.)

I can not see spending $600 to get the original carb rebuilt until (if) I have problems with what is on it.

Mike,

Whoever is charging $600 to rebuild Quadrajets should be wearing a mask
carrying a gun!

Dick Paterson charges $309.00 USD plus shipping.

Dick Patterson charges the $300 or so to rebuild, but if your core
isn't good, then it's another $300 or so and you won't know until you
send it in and he checks it.

Gary,

Dick had a few slides in his presentation at Pueblo which showed how to
determine if your Quadrajet was rebuildable or not.

Basically you have to determine whether or not garage gorillas have
tightened the four mounting bolts down so hard that it warped the top cover,
body, and/or the base plate. The Maintenance Manual specifies 15 ft lb
torque but how many mechanics have you seen using a torque wrench to tighten
down a carb?

He suggested the people call him so he can walk them through how to inspect
it and to confirm it was a carb off a GMC. He will not accept non GMC
Quadrajets as an exchange.

He also noted that he didn't have any cores so if yours is no good you're
probably SOL!

I got a rebuildable core to replace the Carter AFB that was on Double
Trouble from Michael Bozardt for about $100.
