Usually you can put a vin into google and get a carfax entry - then you have to pay for the actual data.

Carfax does not recognize my GMC vin.

Is there something else I can do?

Mileage history on this might be nice to know.

thanks

Some time in the last 25 years, Vehicle serial numbers where standardized. CarFax does not track the older serial numbers.

While I do not know the years the change happened, I know that our TZE's are too old.

It would have been nice if they did track TZE's. It would be an additional resource for Dave and his registry.

CARFAX will only recognize 1980 and later vehicles with 17 digit
VIN numbers............it is a big help documenting mileage for selling used parts in my profession........if you have a CONNECTION at the DMV a title search could recall previous title numbers and mileage when each new title was issued......

...Dave G. might have info on your GMC..

Here in Canada I recently saw a documentary where 60% of Carfax reports
were incorrect...for what it's worth.

Mike;
Funny you should mention CARFAX today. I checked on a 1995 Lumina last
night and the report does not pick up a registered lean on it that the
owner declared.

Have to feel CarFax would be of limited value on a GMC, no?

If the clock shows 65,000 - does it really matter if it's really 265,000? Heck there are many nice (well maintained) GMCs with high mielage versus awful ones in need of TLC 'cause they've been sitting unused too long.

Fot that matter a properly repaired so-called "Total Loss" (given how ACV insurance works) could be perfectly OK.

In a variation on Harrison Ford's line in Raiders of the Lost Ark: "It
ain't the mileage, honey, it's the years."

Many GMCs have been fully ressurected from junk yards, so it is
completely possible to do. Each coach should be evaluated on its own
merits, difficult as it may be to determine all those even with a good
inspection.

But the best assumption is that any coach that has not been very
recently fully renewed (which is a small and expensive subset) will
have a finit list of things that will need repair soon. This is true
for all used vehicles. So, the safest approach is to build that into
the expectations, and check the coach for really expensive faults,
such as rusted frame components or an engine at the end of its life.

The point of Carfax is to avoid buying a car that was squashed and
pulled straight. But there are several factors that make this less
than useful for GMCs:

1. New cars are unibody designs that lose a lot of their fundamental
integrity when pulled straight, while the GMC is a body-on-frame
design.

2. The GMC is mighty difficult to pull straight after being squashed.
The front and rear body shells often shatter in a crash and mostly
have to be replaced when badly damaged. This is actually not ruinously
difficult to do (ask me how I know). The aluminum body frame and
aluminum skin on the upper sides and roof are basically impossible to
straighten effectively, and when damaged to that extent are usually
just repaired by replacing the whole wall section.

3. Thus, if a GMC looks good and has a frame that is straight and free
of dangerous rust (this is not difficult to check), then it should
present little or none of the risk associated with buying a
squashed-but-straightened unibody sedan.

4. Most all GMCs are priced based on their current condition, and
resale value is unlikely to hinge on such hidden damage as Carfax
might reveal. Carfax won't tell you if the frame is perforated with
rust.
