Your correct, pop off the rear cover and access the cable.

I had the same problem with the speedo in my Packard. The cable wasn't
broken (too bad - only $100 for new) The speedo was shot ($197 for a
rebuild) probably a lot less for a GMC, however.
Try removing the screws on each end that hold the top of the dash panel
in place. When you unscrew the cable, take a drive and see if the cable
turns smoothly. If it does you may have a speedo issue. Just my (Usually
inept) assessment of the problem

If it bounces in an even time relative to the speed of the vehicle its the cable(s) If it bounces all over at random and on bumps then the damping is shot on the speedo head itself and it needs to go in for service. If cables are dry, then lubing will probably fix it. If they are worn out it won't. I'd lube first and you will probably get lucky. There should be a little tab to press with your finger to unlock the cable from the head (IIRC as it is that way on most GM)

Don,
Does your coach have cruise control? If so, you will have two cables that are linked to the speedometer from the transmission,
a lower cable and an upper.
I had the same problem of the speedometer jumping as well as the cruise acting erradically. The problem was with the lower cable.
I tried lubricating the lower cable but it did not correct the problem. After removing the cable, I could see why it was binding. Part of the cable casing was missing and the inside was full of rust.

The short cable from trans. to the cruse is burned by the exhaust pipe
and can bind up. We replace lot of them and also sell several a month.

The speedometer does not unscrew. A clip holds it in place. You can depress the tab on the clip and it will easily detach.
You must access the speedometer end because you can pull the speedometer drive worm out of the cable from that end. You probably can then pull the worm out of the cable without fully removing the entire cable.
Before you do this check to see if you can pull the worm out of the transmission end. In my case it had to be the speedometer end.

It can, as stated, be the cable(s) or the speedo head, but it can also be the cruise module going bad mechanically.

That is a good point, Larry.
One other suggestion for Don is to disconnect the longer cable from
the cruise control and connect it directly to the transmission. Drive
the GMC and see if the problem goes away. If it does then you will
know that the problem is either with the short cable or with the
cruise control mechanism.

What tires and wheels are you using. That can also throw the
speedometer off. However, if you were reading correctly before you
attached the main speedometer directly to the tranny then you must
have a speed correction device in line.

Ok I just had this problem, turned out my transducer for the CC had siezed up, causing my speedogear to round. I bypassed the transducer and plugged the long cable directly into a new speedo gear. I found this also cured my speedo bounce. so maybe your CC transducer is getting ready to take a dump, id check it.
disconnect the speedo cable (short) from the tranny, and spin it it should turn freely, if it snags, disconnect it from the transducer and trist again, if it moves freely then its the transducer, if it binds its the cable. mine siezed totally and would not move at all.
Shan
PS, make sure your gov housing clamp is on, had mine pop up when I put in the new gear which caused the gov to disengauge. the tranny isnt to happy without that little weight, and will not wanna go anywhere fast. when I re sat the gov, it then worked fine, and best of all, no more speedo bounce...
