Hi All,
Well here is a trip report from our little run south from Bainbridge Island,
WA down south to southern Utah. Got out on March 1st and have made stops at
Antelope Is. north of Salt Lake and then Snow Canyon in St. George, UT and
then on to Zion. The GMC is going great and the 454 is doing great. The
new four bag system is the best and what a change that has made. Right now
we are at lake Powell and will head for Monument Valley and Moab for some
rides on the Ural sidecar. It is great to be on the road in the GMC.

The fuel lines hold a lot of air & it'll have to pass thru before it will pick
up.You may need to put gas in the carb vent to fill the carb several times
before it catches. This is a "Been there, Done that" for me...

Ron,
While I largely agree with what you are saying, the fact is that those two can be keys to getting unstuck unless you used them to get where you do get really stuck. That is largely a matter of common (as rare as it is) sense.
At one time, I had to travel on roads so problematic that most would have considered it off-roading. I had a - actually several - mentors. I was young and indestructible, but fortunately I listened.
First thing is the minimum kit for such is:
A Day's worth of Water
An Ax
A Shovel
A Long Lead (chain or very heavy line (rope)) 50~100ft
A Winch or Chainfall
An Extra Spare tire (Assuming the vehicle already is carrying one) is also a real good idea.
Don't leave the hard road (there was no local pavement) without knowing how much fuel you have on board.
Make sure someone (that might care) knows where you plan to go.
And the Real Big One....
Never GO FORWARD in 4 Wheel drive. Only use that to back out so you can find another way.
Because, when you get stuck in 4 Wheel Drive - - You Am STUCK bunky.
Why the kit above?
Because ... When you blow through the surface of the swamp that looked like a meadow, you run out the long lead that still won't reach a stout tree, so you get the ax and cut one down. Now you get the shovel and dig a T shaped trench square to the way you want to pull and just in the reach of the chainfall and long lead. So you can tie to the middle of the dead man (what they call a timber used a an anchor) and hopefully haul the thing back to solid ground. That is why you brought the water.

When we were teens, one of the mob had a 'Jeep' - original CJ - which we used to take down in the bottomland at times. It had a pto winch, and he always carried a house trailer anchor and a piece of rebar to turn it with. When you got really bogged in the gumbo, you'd pull the winch cable all the way out, set the anchor, and reel the Jeep up to it. Sometimes two or three lengths to get to solid ground.

Take your GMC out of gear at the top of the west end of that road (engine running for power steering) and you might get to 100 MPH by the time you reached the bottom, IF you could keep it on the curving road!
