I've been butting out on this site since last June. Mostly posting back privately. Hope no ones minded.
But if things come out about the above subjects. I feel that I need to speak up on the site. A lot of GMC owners have either been a pilot. Are a pilot. Or worked around aircraft a lot. I'm in the been group. These 3 groups tend to treat their GMCs more like an aircraft. Preventative maintenance plays a big part of their mindset. Tend to do a preflight ( predrive ) before hitting the road. Do a walk around/check at all fuel stops. ( And don't run their gas tanks below a third full. Never see that low fuel light come on.) They look at the underside, Check fluids, get the temp readings of all tires, wheel bearings, and brake rotors/drums. Will these checks make your fuel stops a few minutes longer. Yes. Not taking these few minutes to check things out. May cost you hours. 10 miles down the road. And put your life on the line. Parked on the shoulder of that Interstate 80.
The DC3 is a magnificent aircraft. As are many other older aircraft. Designed/built in the mid 1930's. And there's a lot of them in full service to this day. The B52 of the early 50's. Is expected to be in service at 100 years old. Again. Well designed, built, and maintained. Our GMC's were well designed, and built. Time has proven that to be true. But it's up to YOU, the owners. To pay Proper attention, and care of these GMC's. Brake downs don't just happen. There caused by simple neglect.
I've said this many times on this site. I've treated both our 78 Royales like Apollo 13. Failure. Is not an option. Have we had some very small issues. Yes. But we've never been towed in 17 years. And a lot of miles. It comes down too. Your comfort zone as to risk. Your call. Do what you wish. Not my Monkey. Not my circus. It's my hope. That I've made some owners think more deeply about risk. We tend to forget stuff because, after all, we can get out and walk. Those of us who remember tend not to have problems on the road - although I can't think of anything to prevent a busted crankshaft.
As an aside, I'm superstitious. Two J-3 Cubs have quit on me in the air. I will not get into another, it will have to fall on me to hurt me:)

Showing up at a rally on a hook or landoll may make a grand entrance but does not show very good planning.
I have never had that experience and don't want to BUT I have seen it done and it is remembered for years (and years)

Always, always much better to do your repairs and preventative maintenance
in your own heated, well lighted, shop where you know where your tools are.
On the road is not the best deal, at all. Those walk arounds with I.R.
thermometer are absolutely time well spent. So is the time out of the
drivers seat. It is restorative to your concentration and alertness. Don't
discount it.
