The most resent ones I've pulled apart have had copper contact terminals. With a plated steel contact washer. The copper contact washer from older solenoids will fit in your new solenoids. The steel washers show much more deterioration with little use. The old copper washer look a lot better over many years of service. So for some longevity. I'll get the new units for the fresh contact terminals. And put in the old copper contact washers. It's very simple to do.

Those solenoids are still available in the parts stream that supplies
automotive remanufacturers. High quality rebuilders still use them, but
their prices are high. As that trade faces really stiff competition from
the Mass Marketers, you might see inferior parts slip in there once in a
while. The rebuilder that I use cusses every time I talk to him about
having to share the reputation that is applied to him unfairly by
association with Auto Zone type retailers that sell only on price point. I
collect known good cores, and when I have 6 or more, I take them to him. He
gives me a slightly better price when he can work them in assembly line
style, with no deadlines. Just what I do.

G'day,
If you click on Cary's link a McMaster catalog page opens and there is a box titled "Strips, Sheets, and Bars."
Click on that box and another page opens with a box at the bottom in the center titled "Super-Conductive 101 Copper Sheets and Bars."
Click on that box and you find heaps of choices!

Sometimes “copper” electrical contacts are in reality a copper alloy chosen for particular beneficial haracteristics. That copper disc in the solenoid may or may not be pure copper. Maybe someone on the ‘net has an XRF gun and would shoot a couple samples to see.
