The PO of my coach had unhooked all the ac and heat system in the dash and its all checking out to put back in operation. He only had hoses to the heat exchanger in the water heater. I have looked through the factory manual and the gmcinfo site and could not find a photo or diagram of hose routing and I would imagine there are t's to tap into the hoses going back since the heater lines have a water valve to stop flow when heat is not wanted. Does anyone know where to find such info, as usual thanks in advance.

Skip,

I don't know where to find a hose routing diagram. Here is a photo and info on a replacement heater shut off valve that I am using.

And in this photo you see the heater hose attached to the right rear corner of the intake manifold via a 5/8 inch tee with one hose runing to the rear and one running forward to the heater box. The other pre heat hose coming from a tee (3/4 x 3/4 x 5/8) at the water pump is shown adjacent.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/head-repair-455-73-glacier/p17565.html

The heater hose from the water pump to the heater core is 3/4 inch and the other 5/8 inch.

Of course since a PO removed all of your hoses -- some of the fitting sizes I have stated may not agree.

Dennis,
I'm drifting this topic some, but now that you have had them a while, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Edelbrock heads and roller rockers. A little pricey, but so is machine work to redo the iron ones, I suppose.

Just install 2 Tees in the lines going to the water heater and install two new hoses going to the heater core.

The cabin heater core and the rear water heat exchanger run in parallel.

Another silly question, would the smaller of the lines on the core be the inlet I believe it's the 5/8 and the other is 3/4?The water valve I got looks just like yours and it is 5/8 I believe. It's had edelbrock heads and manifold put on and both of the lines to the water heater come off the the back of the manifold.

The PO installed th whole enchilada and the chimichangaon my motor. It has the edelbrock whole performer top end and a special rv cam. the biggest issue was tires breaking loose so I cured that with dodge wheels and all terrain tires. the best thing I have done to make it run consistent was to put plenum on carb and pipe in cool as possible air. If you use the cool looking edelbrock air filter it is always is sucking hot air.

Yes, the 5/8 inch line from the rear of the engine manifold is the supply line to the heater core. Also, there was originally a restrictor in the fitting to the manifold -- approx a 3/8 inch hole.

Just match the hose sizes to the heater core fittings. The flow direction through core is unimportant. Plumb the shutoff valve into whatever line it fits in (5/8 or 3/4). Again it makes no difference if you shut off the input or output of the core. Either one stops the flow.
