Don't forget to check the axle bolts every now and then. I have known of at least two guys losing an axle. While waiting on Ken B. this morning I was checking everything on the engine for tightness. I had just checked the axle bolts 1000 miles back. I was surprised to find the driver's side all loose, I mean nearly finger tight. The passenger side was ok. I have in the past wired these things. I am thinking that will happen again when I get home.
See everyone in about 3 weeks. I guess I better pay up or I will have a late charge for the convention. I think the deadline is this week.

Hi Dan,
If these are the same axle bolts I am thinking about, my recollection was that these were a "one time use only" and had to be torqued to a specific spec. When I did my axle boots years ago, I bought new bolts from a local GM Cadillac Buick dealer here in San Diego for something like $8.00 each.

Dan, are you referring to the 12 bolts on each side that connect to the final
drive that get torqued to 65# ??

Gary,
I drilled mine with a cobalt drill from Harbor Freight.
See item 36891 @ $59.99.
Or
Item 47653 @ $99.99 on sale; normally $129.99.
I have the large set here in Sydney and carry the small set in Double
Trouble and they are both amazing quality for cheap Chinese crap.
HOWEVER, as with any cobalt drill you have to be careful when you use them
in a hand held electric drill. They are brittle and can snap easily.

Dan, How did you safety wire the axle bolts?. Those are pretty (extremely)
hard to drill. Did you buy aircraft grade bolts that were pre-drilled.?
Aside from LOCTITE what these really need are a metal tab that anchors
around the flange and then bent up and center punched into the bolt head
points.
Thanks

When I bought my 1974 Sequoia, in November 1977, The passenger side
six cv bolts were loose. I tightened them to spec and 500 miles later
they were loose again. This time I installed new bolts with locktite
and torqued to 70 ft lbs. 500 miles later they were loose again.
Turned out the right front wheel bearing was failing. After replacing
the bearing, the cv bolts have never loosened again.

We need some kind of a tab washer that locks over the flange and then is
bent up to the bolt. Something like these:

Gary Worobec wrote on Mon, 15 August 2011 14:29 | Dan, How did you safety wire the axle bolts?. Those are pretty (extremely)
hard to drill. Did you buy aircraft grade bolts that were pre-drilled.?
Aside from LOCTITE what these really need are a metal tab that anchors
around the flange and then bent up and center punched into the bolt head
points.
Thanks

Gary, yes, they are hard to drill. I did it on Bert Curtis press and he safety wired them for me. Bert is a good guy to know.

And buy:

1 1/4" Fully Threaded 25 ea. 91271A644 $10.86
and
High-Collar Lock Washers
Steel 90073A231 $5.27 Per Pack of 100
That's what I've used for 8-10 years without a problem during many
R&R's. I've just placed the order to replenish my inventory.
