Leave the ignition point alone and install the Pertronix unit.

GOOD ADVICE!

The Onan points where designed to be worked on from one direction (the back of the motor) then it was installed in the "Power Drawer" where that ONE direction was blocked! It takes a mirror and a lot of patience to adjust these in.

There are some that are accessed from the top, but Onan part$ are expen$ive!

I installed a Pertronix on my '78's 4k Onan and it runs very sweet and smooth. (The points quit a while back.) If your points are still good just disconnect them and leave them alone. They will be a good 'back-up' for the module.

Go to the photo site: <http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/>

And search on 'Pertronix' and you'll get several different installations, including mine. Like so:

Most use the same module used on the 1973/74 455's (the 1181) but any 12v negative ground module can be made to work. Do not pay extra for a LS (Lobe sensor) as it does NOT use magnets. (I suspect there is a way to make it work, but why?) There is also a mid price range module with better burn out protection. But as long as your control board is good, the extra protection isn't worth paying extra to get.

Check ebay and craigslist for 'Pertronix' and you'll get lots of hits. If you are patent, you can get them for about $30... used, old stock or something. You can order these modules brand new for about $60 to $65 from on-line sources like Amazon, so do not pay more than that.
